What are plants?

Plants are living things. They grow in soil and use sunlight and water to live. Plants can be small like grass or big like a mango tree (embe). 🌿🌳

Parts of a plant

Leaf (ua) Flower (ua) Stem (shina) Roots (mizizi) Fruit (matunda)
  • Roots (mizizi) – hold the plant and drink water from the soil.
  • Stem (shina) – carries water up to the leaves and flowers.
  • Leaves (ua) – make food for the plant using sunlight.
  • Flower (ua) and Fruit (matunda) – make seeds and food like mangoes.

Why are plants important?

Plants help us and animals. They:

  • Give us oxygen to breathe. 🌬️
  • Give food: maize (mahindi), tea (chai), mango (embe), vegetables. 🌽🍡πŸ₯
  • Give shade and cool places to sit. β˜‚οΈ
  • Help soil stay strong and stop floods and erosion (roots hold soil). 🌧️➑️🌱
  • Give homes for birds and animals. πŸ¦πŸ¦‹

Fun activities for kids (age 6)

Short quiz (ask a child)

1) Name one plant in your home.
2) What part of a plant drinks water? (Answer: Roots)

Tip for teachers and parents: Use Swahili words too (mti = tree, ua = leaf, mizizi = roots) so children learn both languages.
