Water (Maji)

Water droplet Cloud and rain Sun

What is water?

Water is a clear drink. In Swahili water is called maji. We need water every day.

Where do we find water?

  • Rain (mvua) and clouds.
  • Rivers like the Tana River.
  • Lakes like Lake Victoria.
  • The Indian Ocean at the coast.
  • Wells and boreholes at home and in villages.
  • Taps in houses and schools.

Why is water important?

We use water to drink, cook, wash, clean, and help plants and animals live. Farmers use water for their crops. Water can make electricity in dams.

The water cycle (simple)

1. The sun makes water from lakes and rivers go up as invisible steam (evaporation).
2. Steam makes clouds. Then clouds drop rain.
3. Rain fills rivers, lakes and the ground. Then the cycle starts again.

(You can draw sun → cloud → rain → river.)

How kids can save water

  • Turn off the tap when brushing teeth.
  • Use a small cup to pour water on plants.
  • Tell an adult about leaks or a dripping tap.
  • Collect rainwater in a bucket (with help) to water plants.

Water safety

Do not drink water from rivers or lakes unless an adult treats or boils it. Always wash your hands with soap and water. Never go near deep water without a grown-up.

Fun activities (with an adult)

  1. Plant a seed and water it a little every day. Watch it grow!
  2. Collect rain in a clean bucket and count how many litres (with help).
  3. Draw the water cycle: sun, cloud, rain, river.

Song / Rhyme

Maji, maji, sip a little, wash my hands so nice and little. Turn the tap, don't let it pour, save our water evermore!

Tip for teachers and parents: use real examples from your village or town (a local river, lake, borehole) to make learning about water fun and real.
