Hygiene: Cleanliness (Healthy Habits)

Hello! These are easy and fun cleanliness habits to keep you healthy. They are for children in Kenya (age 6).

How to wash hands (fun steps!)

  1. Wet hands with clean water (use jerrycan, borehole or tap). ๐Ÿšฐ
  2. Put soap on your hands. ๐Ÿงผ
  3. Rub palm to palm, between fingers, under nails โ€” sing or count for 20 seconds. ๐ŸŽต (Sing "Happy Birthday" twice or count to 20!)
  4. Rinse with clean water. ๐Ÿ’ง
  5. Dry with a clean towel or let air dry. ๐Ÿงป

Other simple cleanliness habits

  • Use the toilet or pit latrine โ€” always wash hands after. ๐Ÿšฝ
  • Cover food and water containers so dust and insects do not get in. ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
  • Keep nails short and clean โ€” a grown-up can help. โœ‚๏ธ
  • Wear shoes to keep your feet safe. ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ
  • Donโ€™t share toothbrushes or towels. Use your own. ๐Ÿชฅ๐Ÿงด
  • Put rubbish in a bin โ€” keep the home and school clean. ๐Ÿšฎ
  • Take a bath or wash with clean water each day. ๐Ÿ›
Try this (with a parent or teacher):

Practice washing your hands and count to 20. Make a sticker chart for each day you brush your teeth and wash your hands!

For parents & teachers
  • Always give soap and safe water for children to wash.
  • Show children the 20-second song for handwashing.
  • Check teeth and nails, and teach daily bathing.
