Grade 1 Hygiene Healthy habits β Caring for teeth Notes
Hygiene: Healthy Habits
Subtopic: Caring for teeth π¦·
Why take care of our teeth? β€οΈ
- To chew food well (so we can grow strong).
- To smile and talk happily without pain.
- To avoid tummy ache and visits to the dentist for big problems.
How to brush your teeth πͺ₯ (ask a parent to help)
- Wet your toothbrush with clean water π§.
- Put a pea-sized drop of toothpaste on the brush (a little dot) β only a small amount for kids.
- Brush the front of each tooth β top and bottom β in small gentle circles for 2 minutes.
- Brush the chewing parts (the flat parts) and the back of teeth.
- Spit out the toothpaste. Do not swallow it. Rinse your mouth with a little clean water.
Tip: Sing the ABC song twice while brushing β that takes about 2 minutes! π΅
When and how often
- Brush twice every day β in the morning and before bed.
- Ask an adult to help you brush at least once every day until you are older.
- Change your toothbrush every 3 months or when the bristles are worn out.
- Store the brush standing up and let it air dry; do not share toothbrushes.
Foods that help your teeth ππ and foods to eat less of β
Good snacks
- Fresh fruits: mango, banana, orange, pawpaw.
- Vegetables: carrots, sukuma wiki (kale) with ugali.
- Milk and plain yogurt β good for teeth and bones.
Eat less
- Sweets and candies, sticky sweets and toffees.
- Too much soda or sugary juice β these can hurt your teeth.
- Try fresh snacks instead of biscuits every day.
Dentist and school checks (in Kenya)
Visit a dentist if your tooth hurts or has a hole. You can get help at the nearest hospital dental clinic or from school health days when nurses and dentists come to check children. Tell a parent or teacher if your tooth is sore.
Fun tooth activity & reminders π¨
- Make a brushing chart: put stickers for every morning and night you brush.
- Practice the βopen wideβ game with your toothbrush (gently!) so brushing is fun.
- If you feel pain or swelling, tell a grown-up right away β donβt wait.
Quick questions (ask with a parent)
- How many times a day should you brush? (Answer: Twice)
- How big should your toothpaste be for kids? (Answer: Pea-sized)
- Name one food that is good for your teeth. (Answer: a fruit like mango)
Remember: Brush gently, smile big, and ask an adult to help. Keep your teeth happy! π
(This note is for children in Kenya β use clean water and visit your school or local clinic for checks.)
