Hello! We will learn where food comes from and how to keep it clean. Read the short parts and try the little activity at the end.
1. Foods from plants π±
These foods grow from the ground or on trees.
- Maize (used to make ugali) π½
- Rice π, beans π«, and vegetables like sukuma wiki (kale) π₯¬
- Sweet potatoes, cassava, carrots π₯ and onions
- Mangoes, bananas (ndizi) π, oranges π and avocado
2. Foods from animals πππ
These foods come from animals.
- Milk (maziwa) π₯ and yoghurt
- Eggs (mayai) π₯
- Meat (nyama) like beef or chicken π
- Fish (samaki) e.g., tilapia π
3. From shops, markets and gardens πͺπΏ
We can buy food at the market or grow some at home.
- Fresh food from the market (e.g., vegetables, fruit)
- Food from shops and kiosks (packaged foods)
- Home garden β plant your own vegetables and herbs π±
4. Hygiene β Keep foods clean! π§Όπ§
It is very important to keep food and hands clean so we don't get sick.
- Wash your hands with soap and water before eating and cooking. π§Ό
- Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water before you eat them. ππ§
- Cook food well until it is hot. Hot food is safer to eat. π₯
- Keep food covered so flies cannot touch it. πͺ°β
- Use clean water for cooking and washing. π°
- Store food in a safe place and throw away old or rotten food. ποΈ
- If food is sold on the road, check that the seller keeps things clean. If not, wait or buy from a clean place. ποΈ
