Why We Eat Food

Hello! We will learn why we eat food and how to keep it clean and safe. 😊

What is food?

Food is what we eat. It comes from plants and animals. In Kenya, some foods are:

  • Ugali 🍽️
  • Sukuma wiki (green vegetables) πŸ₯¬
  • Beans and maize 🌽
  • Samaki (fish) 🐟 and nyama (meat) πŸ—
  • Maziwa (milk) πŸ₯› and matunda (fruits) like ndizi (bananas) 🍌, matunda ya embe (mango) πŸ₯

Why do we eat? (Very simple!)

To grow tall 🌱 Food gives us things our body needs to grow.
To have energy ⚑ Food gives us energy to play and learn.
To stay healthy ❀️ Good food keeps our body strong to fight sickness.
To heal wounds 🩹 Food helps our cuts and bruises get better.

Hygiene: Keep food clean and safe

If food is not clean, tiny germs can make us sick. Follow these easy steps:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before eating. 🧼🀲
  • Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water. πŸ’§πŸŽ
  • Cook food well (hot) so germs are killed. πŸ”₯🍲
  • Keep food covered so flies can’t touch it. πŸͺ°βž‘️❌
  • Use clean plates and cups. Wash them after use. 🧽🍽️
  • Store milk and perishable food in a cool place. πŸ₯›β„️

How to tell if food is safe

Safe food usually smells normal, looks fresh, and was kept in a clean place.

βœ… Smells okay
βœ… Washed or cooked
❌ If it smells bad or looks strange, do not eat it!

Fun little rhyme

Eat to grow, eat to play, wash your hands before each day! 🎢

Activity for you

Draw your plate. Put a tick (βœ“) next to foods that are clean and a cross (βœ—) next to foods that are not washed.
