Hygiene β Common accidents at home
Subtopic: Accidents and causes
Hello! π These notes tell you about accidents at home and why they happen. They also show simple hygiene ideas to keep you safe. This is for children in Kenya (age 6).
What accidents happen? π€
- Slips and falls on wet floors (e.g., after mopping) πΆββοΈπ¦
- Burns from hot water or the jiko/stove π₯ (charcoal jiko or hot pot)
- Cuts from broken glass or sharp items βοΈ
- Poisoning from household chemicals like Jik, detergents and paraffin/kerosene π§΄β οΈ
- Food poisoning from dirty hands or uncovered food π½οΈπ€’
- Choking on small toys or food (e.g., peanuts) π§Έπ¬
Why these accidents happen π―
- Floors are wet after cleaning and nobody warned you π§
- Hot water or tea left where children can reach β
- Cleaning chemicals are left on low shelves or in bottles without labels π§΄
- Hands are not washed before touching food or dishes βπ½οΈ
- Toys and small things left on the floor make you trip or choke π§Έ
Hygiene tips to stop accidents β
- Always wash your hands with soap and water before eating and after toilet time. π°π§Ό
- Wear slippers when floors are wet. They help stop slips. π©΄
- Ask an adult to heat water. Keep hot pans and jikos away from the edge. π₯
- Keep Jik, detergents and paraffin in high locked cupboards. Put labels on bottles. π
- Cover food and keep it clean. Do not eat food that looks or smells bad. π½οΈπ«
- Pick up toys and small things so nobody trips and so babies do not put them in their mouths. π§Έβ‘οΈbox
- If you spill water, tell an adult to mop or put a sign until it dries. π§Ή
If someone gets hurt β simple steps π©Ή
- If bleeding, ask a grown-up to wash the cut with clean water and cover with a clean cloth or plaster. π©Ί
- For burns, run cool (not cold) water on the area and tell an adult. Do not put butter or oil. π±
- If someone ate chemicals or is very sick, tell an adult and get help quickly. If it is very bad, call for emergency help. π
- Always tell a parent, teacher or another trusted grown-up. They will know what to do. π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦
Short rules to remember (easy!) π
1. Wash hands. 2. Walk, do not run. 3. Ask a grown-up for hot things. 4. Keep chemicals high. 5. Pick up toys. Stay safe and clean! π
Note for caregivers: Use child-safe storage for chemicals (e.g., locked cabinets), supervise near jikos and when handling hot water, and teach handwashing with songs to make it fun.
