Hygiene: Care for Body Parts

These are short notes to help you learn how to keep your body clean and healthy. Ask Mama, Baba or your teacher to help when you need.

When to clean
  • Before eating ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

  • When your hands or body are dirty
How to wash your hands (easy steps)

Wet hands with clean water ๐Ÿ’ง

Put soap and rub for 20 seconds (sing the ABC or Happy Birthday twice)

Rinse well and dry with a clean towel or let air dry ๐Ÿงบ
Care for each body part

Hands: Wash with soap before eating and after the toilet. Keep nails short and clean.

Teeth and mouth: Brush morning and before bed. Use a pea-sized paste and a soft toothbrush. Visit the school nurse if a tooth hurts.

Hair: Wash your hair with water and soap (shampoo) regularly. Comb gently and keep hair neat.

Body: Have a bath or shower every day or when sweaty. Use soap to clean your skin.

Ears and nose: Wipe the outside of ears with a clean cloth. Gently blow your nose into a tissue or handkerchief.

Fingernails and toenails: Keep nails short and clean. Ask an adult to help cut nails safely.

Clothes: Wear clean clothes. Change underpants every day. Wash clothes and dry them in the sun when possible.

Feet: Wash and dry your feet. Wear sandals or shoes to protect feet from cuts and dirt.

Private parts: Wash your private parts when bathing. If anyone asks to touch your private parts, say "No" and tell a trusted adult right away.
Safe water and toilets (Kenyan homes and schools)
  • Use clean water for washing. If water is from a river or collected rainwater, ask an adult to boil or treat it first.
  • Always use the latrine or toilet. Wash hands with soap after using it.
  • If at school, follow the teacher's rules to keep toilets clean for everyone.
Tell an adult if...
  • You have a sore or swelling that does not get better
  • A tooth hurts a lot
  • Someone touches your private parts or makes you feel scared
