Simple First Aid (Hygiene)

For children (age 6) β€” easy, safe steps to help keep you and friends clean and safe. Remember: always tell an adult right away!

Emergency? Tell an adult and call for help

If someone is very hurt, cannot breathe, or is losing a lot of blood, tell a teacher, parent or neighbour. In Kenya you can ask an adult to call 999 or 112 for help. πŸš¨πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ

1) Wash your hands

πŸ§ΌπŸ’§

Steps (sing "Happy Birthday" twice while washing):

  • Wet hands with clean water.
  • Use soap and rub front, back, between fingers.
  • Rinse, then dry with a clean towel.

2) Cuts and scrapes

πŸ€•πŸ©Ή
  • Tell an adult first.
  • Adult should wash their hands and then gently clean the cut with water.
  • Pat dry with a clean cloth. Put a plaster or small bandage on it.
  • Watch for redness or swelling β€” tell an adult if it gets worse.

3) Nosebleed

🀧🩸
  • Tell an adult straight away.
  • Sit down and lean forward slightly (so blood does not go into your throat).
  • Pinch the soft part of the nose for 5–10 minutes. Breathe through your mouth.
  • If bleeding does not stop, adult should call 999/112.

4) Minor burns (small hot spills)

πŸ”₯❄️
  • Tell an adult at once.
  • Cool the burn under cold running water for 10–20 minutes (adult helps).
  • Do NOT put ice, butter, or toothpaste on a burn.
  • Cover with a clean, dry cloth and see an adult for more help.

5) Insect bites and stings

🐝πŸͺ²
  • Tell an adult. If there is a sting, adult may remove the sting carefully.
  • Wash the area with soap and water.
  • Put a cold pack or clean cloth on it to reduce swelling.
  • If the person has trouble breathing or looks very sick, call 999/112.

6) Choking (someone coughing)

🍞⚠️
  • If someone is coughing strongly, tell them to keep coughing β€” this can help.
  • If they cannot breathe, speak, or cry, tell an adult quickly.
  • Adult should act and may call 999/112 for help.

Good hygiene to prevent problems

  • Keep nails short and clean.
  • Wear clean clothes and shoes.
  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing (use a tissue or elbow).
  • Do not share bandages, toothbrushes, or food when sick.
When to go to the clinic or hospital
  • Deep or very dirty cuts.
  • Big burns or lots of pain.
  • Very heavy bleeding that does not stop.
  • Breathing problems or severe allergic reaction.

Remember: Your main job is to stay safe, tell an adult, and keep things clean. You can help by washing hands and being calm. πŸ‘¦πŸ‘§
