Forms — Drawing (Art & Craft)

Hello! Today we learn about forms. Forms are shapes that look 3-D — they have depth. We use them when we draw things like a ball, a box, or a cup.

Easy idea: 2D vs 3D

A shape is flat (2D) — like a circle or square on paper. A form looks solid (3D) — like a ball (sphere) or a box (cube).

Common forms and examples

Sphere — ball (e.g. football)
Cube / Box — e.g. a wooden school box
Cylinder — e.g. a cooking jiko (round) or cup
Cone — e.g. an ice-cream cone

How to draw a simple box (step by step)

  1. Draw a square (front face).
  2. Draw a smaller square a little up and right (back face).
  3. Join the corners with straight lines — you have a box!
  4. Shade one side darker to show depth.
1. Square 2. Back square 3. Join corners

Fun practice activities (Kenyan ideas)

  • Draw your school bag as a box (cube). Shade one side darker.
  • Draw a football as a sphere. Add a small light spot to show shine.
  • Draw a cup or water jerrycan as a cylinder. Add an oval top and bottom.
  • Draw an ice-cream cone or a sugarcane cone as a cone.
  • Make a picture using at least three forms — e.g., ball, box, and cup.

Materials you need

Paper, pencil, eraser, ruler (for boxes), and crayons or colour pencils.

Quick review — questions to try

  1. What is a form? (Answer: a 3D shape with depth)
  2. Name two forms you can see in your house.
  3. Which form is a football? (sphere)

Great work! Try drawing one form every day. Ask a friend or a parent to guess the form you drew.
