Importance of Breakfast

Hello! Breakfast is the first meal you eat in the morning. It helps your body and brain wake up so you can play and learn at school. 🇰🇪🍽️

🌞
Why breakfast helps you
  • Gives energy to run, play and learn.
  • Helps you think well in class and during exams.
  • Helps your body grow strong.
  • Stops you from feeling very hungry before lunch.

Good Kenyan breakfast ideas

  • Uji (porridge) with milk — warm and healthy 🥣
  • Boiled egg with bread or chapati — lots of protein 🥚
  • Mandazi or mahamri with fruit — a small sweet treat 🍌
  • Milk and fruit (banana, mango or pawpaw) — quick and tasty 🥛🍌
  • Sweet potato or plain potatoes with a little butter — filling and local 🍠

Simple morning routine

  1. Wake up on time ⏰
  2. Wash your hands with soap and water ✅
  3. Eat a healthy breakfast 🍽️
  4. Brush your teeth after breakfast 🪥
  5. Pack your school bag and go to school 🎒

Quick uji recipe (for a parent to help)

  1. Mix 1 cup of maize flour with a little cold water to make a paste.
  2. Boil 3 cups of water. Slowly add the paste while stirring.
  3. Cook for 5–10 minutes until thick. Add milk and a little sugar or salt.
  4. Serve warm — children love it with banana or milk!
Hygiene tips (very important):
  • Always wash hands before eating.
  • Use clean plates and cups.
  • Keep food covered to stay safe from flies.
  • Brush your teeth after breakfast to keep them strong.
Try this at school:

Pack a small snack if your school is far from home — a banana, a boiled egg, or a small uji in a flask. It will help you stay focused during lessons. 🍌🥚

Fun activity:

Draw your favourite Kenyan breakfast on a paper plate. Colour it and show your teacher or parent! 🎨🍽️

Parents/Teachers: encourage regular breakfast, help with safe cooking, and teach hand-washing before meals.
