πŸ’§ Keeping Water Safe From Contamination
Subject: Hygiene and Nutrition β€” Topic: Contamination
For children (age 7) in Kenya
What is contamination? πŸ¦ πŸ’©
Contamination is when dirt, germs or nasty things get into water. If water is contaminated people can get sick. We must keep water clean.
Where can water get dirty? πŸ€”
  • From animals drinking in the water πŸ„πŸ
  • When hands, cups or dirty jerrycans touch it βœ‹πŸ«—
  • When latrines or rubbish are too close to wells or springs πŸš½βž‘οΈπŸ’§
  • From floods, ponds or open rivers that have dirt and germs 🌊
How to keep water safe β€” easy steps βœ…
1. Always cover water
Use a clean lid or bucket with a tap so dust and animals cannot get in. πŸ›‘οΈ
2. Use clean containers and ladles
Wash jerrycans and cups with soap and water. Use a ladle to scoop water. πŸ«—πŸ§Ό
3. Boil water (ask an adult)
Boil until big bubbles come for 1 minute. This kills germs. πŸ”₯πŸ’§
4. Use chlorine or tablets (with help)
A few drops of chlorine (bleach) or a tablet can clean water. Adult must measure right. 🧴
5. SODIS β€” sun clean for small bottles
Fill clear plastic bottles and put them in the sun for 6 hours (or all day if cloudy). β˜€οΈ PET bottles only.
6. Keep latrines away from water
Don’t build toilets close to wells or springs. Tell an adult if a toilet is too near. πŸš«πŸš½βž‘οΈπŸ’§
7. Don’t put hands or animals in stored water
Use a clean cup or ladle. Keep goats and cows away from storage containers. πŸπŸ‘‹
8. Wash hands with soap
Always wash hands before making or drinking water and after using the toilet. πŸ§Όβœ‹

My water promise!
I will: cover water, use a clean cup, wash my hands, and tell an adult if water is dirty. β€” Signed: __________
(Teachers or parents: help the child sign and put this where everyone can see.)
Note: Always ask an adult to help with boiling, chemicals or when checking wells and springs.
