What is weather?

Weather is what happens outside the house on a day. It can be sunny, rainy, windy or cloudy.

Kinds of weather you see in Kenya

  • Sunny ☀️ — bright sun. Eg. in Nairobi some mornings are sunny.
  • Hot 🌞 — warm days, often in coastal places like Mombasa.
  • Rainy 🌧️ — water from clouds falls as rain. Happens in rainy seasons.
  • Cloudy ☁️ — clouds cover the sky. The sun is hidden.
  • Windy 🍃 — air moves fast. It can blow leaves and dust.
  • Cool / Cold 🧣 — higher places like the Rift Valley and mountains can be cool.

Important words

Weather — what the sky and air are like today.

Rain — water drops from the sky.

Sun — gives light and heat.

Wind — moving air.

Temperature — how hot or cold it is.

Simple activities (for school or at home)

  1. Make a weather chart.
Draw boxes for days of the week. Each day stick a picture: sun, cloud, rain, wind.
  2. Make a rain gauge (with a grown-up).
Cut the top off a clear plastic bottle, mark cm on the side, put it outside to catch rain. Check after rain and write the number.
  3. Dress-up for weather game.
Match clothes to weather: umbrella for rain, hat for sun, coat for cold.
  4. Plant trees in the rainy season.
Trees give shade and help the soil hold water. Planting helps the environment.

Safety tips

  • When it is hot, wear a hat and drink water.
  • When it rains, use an umbrella and avoid flooded places.
  • Never play near lightning or strong storms — go indoors.

Fun little tests

Try these with a teacher or parent:

  • Draw today’s weather and write one sentence about it.
  • Trace five days of weather and see which is most common.
  • Match pictures: sun → sunglasses; rain → umbrella; wind → kite.

Keep watching the sky — learning about weather is fun!
