Grade 2 Environmental Activities Environment And Its Resources – Recording Weather Conditions Notes
Environmental Activities — Environment and Its Resources
Subtopic: Recording Weather Conditions
Weather is what we see outside today — sun, clouds, rain, wind or fog. We can watch and record the weather every day. This helps us learn about our environment and the seasons in Kenya (long rains: March–May and short rains: Oct–Dec).
Jua (Sun)
Mawingu (Clouds)
Mvua (Rain)
Upepo (Wind)
Hali ya joto (Temp)
What to look for each day
- Is it sunny, cloudy, rainy or windy?
- How warm or cold is it? (Ask an adult to read a thermometer.)
- Did it rain? How much? (Use a rain gauge.)
- When did you look? (Morning, noon, evening)
Simple tools we use
Thermometer
Shows how hot or cold. Ask an adult to help read it. Write temperature in °C.
Rain gauge
A clear bottle with marks to see how much rain fell (mm).
Observation
Look at the sky to count clouds, wind and sun.
Make a simple rain gauge (with an adult)
- Use a clean plastic bottle. Cut the top off.
- Put a ruler inside or mark lines with a permanent pen for every 1 cm.
- Place the bottle in an open place (not under a tree).
- After rain, read the water level (writing mm or cm).
How to record — easy daily sheet
Pick a time (e.g., morning) and fill one row each day. Use pictures or words.
| Day | Weather | Rain (yes/no) | Temp (°C) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | ☀️ | No | 24 | Warm |
| Tue | ☁️ | No | 22 | Cloudy |
| Wed | ||||
| Thu | ||||
| Fri |
Short activity — Watch and draw
For 5 days, draw the sky in your notebook at the same time each day (e.g., 8 a.m.). Write one sentence: "Today it is ____." Use simple Swahili word if you like (e.g., Mvua, Jua, Mawingu).
Safety tips
- Always ask an adult to help with thermometers or cutting bottles.
- If it is raining or stormy, stay inside and watch from a safe place.
- Carry a raincoat or umbrella during the rainy seasons.
Remember: Recording weather is fun! Do it every day and you will see patterns — when Kenya has long rains or short rains. Ask your teacher to help make a big class weather chart.
(If you want, I can make a printable weather sheet for you to use at school.)
