Key vocabulary — games & sports

(Arabic — transliteration — English) — emojis help visualise

Pronunciation: Long vowels (حروف المد)

Letters that make a long vowel: ا (ā), و (ū), ي (ī). Hold the sound a little longer (about two beats) — this can change meaning or make the word clearer when listening.

  • ا example: السِّبَاحَة — as-sibāḥa (swimming) — contains ā (ا) in سباحة.
  • ا example in compound: كرة الطائرة — kurat aṭ-ṭā'ira — the طاـ has long ā (ا).
  • ي example: جري (al-jari / al-jary) — the ي can give an ī-like sound in some forms (listen for final vowel length).
  • و example (common in other words): سباق — sibāq (long ā due to ا) — also look for و when present as ū (e.g., دورية has و as long ū).

Tip: when listening, if you hear a longer vowel sound, match it to the written long-vowel letter (ا، و، ي) to recognise the correct word.

Expressing likes and dislikes — simple sentences (grammar focus)

Use the verb أحب (to like) and the negation لا (do not) in present tense:

  • أنا أحب كرة القدم. — Ana uḥibbu kurat al-qadam. — I like football.
  • أنا لا أحب السباحة. — Ana lā uḥibbu as-sibāḥa. — I do not like swimming.
  • هل تحب كرة السلة؟ — Hal tuḥibbu kurat as-salla? — Do you like basketball?
  • نعم، أحبها. — Naʿam, uḥibbu-hā. — Yes, I like it. (هَا for feminine object like كرة)

Present-tense conjugation of أحب (useful when listening for who likes what):

أنا أَحِبّ — ana aḥibbu (I like)
أنتَ تُحِبّ — anta tuḥibbu (you m.)
أنتِ تُحِبّين — anti tuḥibbeena (you f.)
هو يُحِبّ — huwa yuḥibbu (he likes)
هي تُحِبّ — hiya tuḥibbu (she likes)
هم يُحِبّون — hum yuḥibboona (they like)
Attentive listening — grammar cues to catch the gist

When listening to a short oral text, focus on these grammar elements to identify the main idea:

  • Nouns (أسماء): names of sports and games (كرة القدم، السباحة، التنس). These are the most important keywords.
  • Verbs (أفعال): like يلعب (he plays), يحب (he likes), يكره (he hates). They show action or opinion.
  • Negation (لا): shows dislikes — e.g., لا أحب = I do not like.
  • Question particle (هل): indicates a yes/no question about preference.
  • Long vowels (ا، و، ي): listening for long sounds helps distinguish similar words (hold the vowel sound).
Short listening texts (read aloud or use in class)
  1. Arabic line:
أنا أحب كرة القدم. أخي يسبح في البحر. أحياناً نلعب كرة السلة في المدرسة.
Transliteration: Ana uḥibbu kurat al-qadam. Akhī yasbaḥu fī al-baḥr. Aḥyānan nalʿabu kurat as-salla fī al-madrasa.
    Tasks:
    • 1) Which sports are mentioned? (identify nouns)
    • 2) Which sentence shows a like? (find verb أحب)
    • 3) Find a long vowel in the text (حرف مد) and underline it.
  2. Arabic line:
هل تحب السباحة أم كرة الطائرة؟ أنا أحب السباحة أكثر.
Transliteration: Hal tuḥibbu as-sibāḥa am kurat aṭ-ṭā'ira? Ana uḥibbu as-sibāḥa akthar.
    Tasks:
    • 1) Is this a question or statement? (look for هل)
    • 2) Which sport is preferred? (listen for أحب + more/most words)
    • 3) Identify the long vowel in الطائرة or السباحة (ا).
Sample answers (use after pupils attempt):
  • Text 1: Sports — كرة القدم، السباحة، كرة السلة. Like sentence — أنا أحب كرة القدم. Long vowel example — السباحة (ا in سباحة gives ā).
  • Text 2: It is a question (هل). Preferred sport — السباحة (أنا أحب السباحة أكثر). Long vowel example — الطائرة (طا has long ā).
Class activities (age 11, Kenyan context)
  1. Teacher reads a short paragraph about a pupil's favourite sport. Pupils listen and write the sport name and whether the pupil likes or dislikes it. Focus: recognise nouns and أحب/لا.
  2. Pair work: Student A says a sentence ("أنا أحب ..."), Student B asks "هل تُحِب ...؟" Practice correct long-vowel pronunciation (hold ا/و/ي sounds).
  3. Listening discrimination: teacher reads two similar words (e.g., سباق — سَبق, طائرة — طَرَئة). Pupils point to the correct picture (use images or emojis above).
  4. Writing: Pupils write 3 short Arabic sentences describing games they like using أحب / لا أحب and include one word with a long vowel.
Note: Keep sentences short and clear when speaking. Focus on keyword nouns (games), verbs of preference, negation, and listening for long vowels to get the gist fast.
