Grade 5 Science Matter โ Acids And Basis Notes
Matter โ Acids and Bases (for Grade 4 / Age ~10)
We already know matter is everything around us. Here we learn about two kinds of substances: acids and bases.
Acid (Asidi) ๐
Acids taste sour (like lemon). They can turn blue litmus paper red. Examples: lemon (ndimu) ๐, vinegar (siki) ๐งด, soda (soda).
Base (Msingi) / Alkali ๐งผ
Bases feel soapy and can taste bitter. They turn red litmus paper blue. Examples: soap (sabuni) ๐งผ, washing soda, baking soda (soda ya kupikia) ๐ง.
The pH scale (0 โ 14)
0 (very acidic)
7 (neutral)
14 (very basic)
Quick examples: Lemon, Vinegar โ acidic. Soap, Baking soda โ basic. Water is about neutral (pH 7).
How to test: Indicators
- Litmus paper: blue โ turns red in acid. Red โ turns blue in base.
- Red cabbage juice (natural indicator): makes acids pink/red and bases green/blue/purple. Easy to make at school.
Simple class experiments (with a teacher or adult)
1. Vinegar + Baking soda (Fizz!) ๐ซง
- Put a small spoon of baking soda in a cup.
- Pour a little vinegar (siki) slowly into the cup.
- Watch the fizz โ this is gas (carbon dioxide) being made.
- What happened? An acid (vinegar) reacted with a base (baking soda).
2. Make red cabbage indicator (safe and colorful) ๐
- Chop some red cabbage leaves and boil in water for 5โ10 minutes (ask an adult).
- Let cool and filter the purple water into small cups.
- Add a drop of lemon juice to one cup โ the colour should turn pink/red (acid).
- Add a little baking soda to another cup โ the colour will turn green/blue (base).
Safety first!
- Always have a teacher or adult when doing experiments.
- Do not taste or drink any chemicals.
- Wear gloves or wash hands after touching soap or baking soda.
Quick quiz (write answers)
- Is lemon juice an acid or a base?
- What colour does blue litmus paper turn in an acid?
- Name one safe indicator you can make at home.
Good work! Ask your teacher to show you more experiments. Remember: acids and bases are part of matter and help us understand how things react.
