What is a resource?

A resource is something we use to meet our needs. It can be natural (from the ground or water), made by people, or a skill someone has.

Example: soil to grow maize, fish from a lake, trees for timber, or the harbour at Mombasa for ships.

Resources found in some Kenyan counties

• Uasin Gishu — fertile soil for maize and wheat 🌾
• Kericho & Nyeri — highlands for tea and coffee ☕️
• Kisumu — Lake Victoria for fish and transport 🐟
• Mombasa & Kilifi — beaches and ports for tourism and trade 🏖️⚓

How resources create economic activities

When a county has resources, people use them to do work that earns money. Examples:

• Farming from good soil — farmers sell maize, tea or vegetables.
• Fishing in lakes or the sea — fishermen sell fish at markets.
• Tourism in game reserves and beaches — jobs in hotels and as guides.
• Mining or oil work — companies create jobs and build roads.

How we protect county resources

• Plant trees to save forests and stop soil erosion 🌱
• Use water carefully — don’t waste it 💧
• Keep rivers and beaches clean — no littering 🗑️
• Follow rules when visiting parks and reserves 🦁
