Subtopic: Spelling Instructions (Age: 8, Kenya)
Specific Learning Outcomes
- Spell and write simple words used in sentences (everyday words: school, home, teacher, market).
- Apply simple spelling rules when adding endings: -s, -es, -ing, -ed, and when changing y → i.
- Form short grammatical sentences using correct word order (Subject + Verb + Object) and correct spacing.
- Use a capital letter at the start of a sentence and at names, and put a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark at the end.
- Notice and correct common simple spelling mistakes (double letters, silent letters, dropped e before -ing).
Important Spelling Instructions (Simple Rules)
1. Start each sentence with a capital letter
Example: The boy plays. (T is capital)
2. Use a full stop (.) at the end of a statement
Example: She goes to school.
3. Spaces between words — one space only
Correct: My mum cooks rice. — wrong: My mum cooks rice
4. Add -s or -es for plurals
Most words: book → books
Words ending in -s, -x, -ch, -sh: add -es: box → boxes

5. Adding -ing and -ed
- Drop final silent e before -ing: make → making

Suggested Learning Experiences (classroom & home)
- Warm-up (5 min): Teacher says a word slowly; learners clap for each sound (phoneme). Use local words: kitabu (book), shule (school) — practise English pairs: book, school.
- Spelling word sort (10 min): Give cards with words ending -s, -es, -ing, -ed and let learners group them. Use simple words: play/plays/playing, box/boxes.
- Build a sentence (10–15 min): Give word cards (Amina / eats / an / orange). Learners arrange to make correct sentence: "Amina eats an orange." Check capitals and full stop.
- Pair reading and correction (10 min): Learners read a short sentence to a partner. Partner checks: capital letter, spacing, spelling and end mark.
- Spelling bee (short): Call 6–8 words used that week. Encourage correct spelling aloud and then writing on the board.
- Home task: Write three sentences about your home or school. Check capitals and full stops. Parents/guardians to help find one spelling mistake and correct it together.

Tips for Teacher / Parent
- Model one sentence at a time. Ask the child to copy, check capital and full stop.
- Use local context in sentences (school, market, family names) to make learning meaningful.
- When a child misspells, ask: "What sound do you hear first?" and break the word into sounds.
- Praise correct attempts and correct gently. Use a small spelling book to note difficult words.
