Tenses — topic_name_replace

Subject: subject_replace   |   Target age: age_replace   |   Context: Kenya

1. What are tenses?

Tenses tell us when an action happens: in the present, in the past, or in the future. Knowing tenses helps speakers in Kenya (and everywhere) make clear sentences about events, stories, plans and exams.

2. Main tense groups (simple view)

Present
Simple: I walk.
Use: habits, facts.
Past
Simple: I walked.
Use: finished actions.
Future
Simple: I will walk.
Use: plans, predictions.

3. Useful forms and examples (Kenyan context)

Present Simple — Structure: subject + base verb (add -s for he/she/it)

Example: "She teaches at the local primary school." (habit / permanent job)

Present Continuous (Progressive) — Structure: subject + am/is/are + verb+ing

Example: "They are planting trees in the school compound." (action happening now)

Past Simple — Structure: subject + past form of verb

Example: "We visited Nairobi National Park last weekend."

Past Continuous — Structure: subject + was/were + verb+ing

Example: "I was studying when the power went off." (background action)

Present Perfect — Structure: subject + have/has + past participle

Example: "She has completed her assignment." (result connected to now)

Future Simple — Structure: subject + will + base verb

Example: "We will visit the museum on Saturday." (plan / promise)

5. Common time words (signals)

  • Present: every day, usually, now, always
  • Past: yesterday, last week, in 2010, ago
  • Present perfect: already, yet, just, ever, never
  • Future: tomorrow, next week, soon, in (two days)

6. Common mistakes & quick tips (for learners in Kenya)

  • Mixing past and present: Avoid "I go to Nairobi yesterday." → Use "I went to Nairobi yesterday."
  • Missing -s with he/she: "He go" → "He goes."
  • Using present perfect with finished past time: Don't say "I have seen him yesterday." → "I saw him yesterday."
  • Use time words: Add "last week," "now," "tomorrow" to make tense clear.
  • Pronunciation: Practise regular and irregular past forms (e.g., walked vs. went).

7. Short practice (age: age_replace)

  1. She ______ (teach) at the school every day.
  2. Yesterday we ______ (see) a cheetah at the park.
