Grade 4 islamic religious education AKHLAQ (MORAL TEACHINGS) – Dimensions of Morality in Islam Notes
AKHLAQ (MORAL TEACHINGS)
Subtopic: Dimensions of Morality in Islam
Specific Learning Outcomes (By the end of this lesson the learner should be able to):
- Identify sources of morality in Islam as a guide to good behaviour.
- Explain the purpose of morality in promoting uprightness in society.
- Practise Islamic moral values in day-to-day life to earn rewards from Allah.
- Regard Islamic values as a form of ibadah (worship).
What is Morality (Akhlaq)?
Akhlaq means good manners and character. It is how a Muslim behaves towards Allah, people, animals and the environment. Good akhlaq makes families, schools and communities peaceful and happy. 😊
Sources of Morality
- 📖 The Quran – Allah’s words that show what is right and wrong.
- 🕋 The Sunnah (Hadith) – Sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) that guide our behaviour.
- 👪 Parents and Teachers – They teach manners and correct behaviour.
- 🌍 Community and Role Models – Neighbours, elders and the mosque leaders show good examples.
Dimensions of Morality (Simple for children)
- Spiritual (Towards Allah) – Doing things to please Allah: praying, being honest, remembering Allah. 🕌
- Personal (Self-control) – Being truthful, patient, humble and avoiding bad habits. 💭
- Social (Towards People) – Kindness, respect for elders, sharing, helping the poor. 🤝👵
- Environmental (Towards Creation) – Keeping the environment clean, protecting animals and trees. 🌳🐦
Purpose of Morality
Why do we learn akhlaq?
- To make homes and schools peaceful and safe.
- To build trust and fairness in the community (no stealing, cheating).
- To please Allah and earn rewards (sawab) for our good actions.
- To be good role models for others, especially younger children and friends.
How to Practise Islamic Moral Values Every Day
Small deeds are very important. Try these simple acts:
- Say “As‑Salam‑Alaikum” when greeting others. ✋
- Be honest with teachers, parents and friends — tell the truth. ✅
- Share your food or school items with classmates. 🍞📚
- Help your mother or father with small chores at home. 🧹
- Show respect to elders — stand up when they enter, listen to them. 🙏
- Keep your classroom and home clean — cleanliness is part of faith (taharah). 🧼
- Forgive friends after a mistake and say sorry if you are wrong. 💖
Akhlaq as Ibadah (Worship)
Good manners are worship when you do them for the sake of Allah. Helping others, telling the truth, praying on time and being kind are ways to get closer to Allah and gain reward.
Suggested Learning Experiences (Age 9, Kenya)
- Story Time (15–20 min): Read a short story about a child who shows good akhlaq (e.g., helps a neighbour, keeps promise). Ask learners what they would do.
- Role Play (20 min): In groups, act out everyday situations — sharing at break time, greeting an elder, returning a lost item. Discuss feelings and rewards.
- Good Deed Chart (ongoing): Each child gets a chart to mark one good deed daily for a week. Reward sincere effort with a class dua or sticker.
- Drawing Activity (15 min): Draw a picture of one way to show akhlaq in school or at home (share, clean, pray). Display on the classroom wall.
- Memory Verse (5–10 min): Learn a short Quranic line or hadith about good behaviour (teacher chooses child‑friendly phrase). Repeat together.
- Community Link (short): Invite an imam or respected elder to speak about manners and simple examples from everyday Kenyan life.
Assessment Ideas
- Observe children during role plays and school breaks (checklist of behaviours).
- Ask simple oral questions: "Name one source of akhlaq," "How can you help at home?"
- Review the Good Deed Chart and discuss examples in class.
