1. What is Muamalat? (Simple)
Muamalat are the rules that teach us how to deal with other people in business, trade and money matters. Islam wants us to be honest, kind and fair when earning and spending money.
2. Halal and Haram Ways of Earning
Halal (Allowed) examples:
- Helping in a family farm and selling vegetables at the market.
- Working as a teacher, carpenter, barber, or driver (honestly).
- Running a small shop, selling crafts, or making bread for sale.
- Accepting money for honest work without cheating.
Haram (Not allowed) examples:
- Stealing or taking things that are not yours.
- Cheating buyers or sellers (giving wrong weights).
- Bribery or gambling (games where people lose money unfairly).
- Dealing in things that harm people (e.g., selling alcohol or pork if this is forbidden by the family community).
- Taking interest (riba) in ways taught to older students and families.
3. How to Spend Money to Please Allah (S.W.T.)
Spending in ways that please Allah includes:
- Giving to the poor (sadaqah) and helping neighbours.
- Paying for family needs like food, clothes and school fees.
- Supporting the mosque or community projects.
- Saving for good reasons (e.g., education) and avoiding waste.
4. Effects of Spending Income in Haram Ways
When someone earns or spends in wrong ways, it can cause:
- Sadness and guilt inside the person.
- Hurt to other people (if they were cheated or stolen from).
- Loss of Allah’s blessings in the home and community.
- Problems with family and friends because of unfair behaviour.
5. Lawful Earning as Ibadah (Worship)
When we earn honestly and spend to help others, it becomes worship. Our good intentions (niyyah) and honest work bring reward from Allah. Even small honest jobs are great if we do them with the right heart.
6. Benefits of Spending in Legitimate Ways
- Peace at home and trust in the community.
- Rewards from Allah and good examples for others.
- Pride in honest work and a safe life without fear.
- Community development — schools, mosques, and clinics can be supported.
Simple Story (Kenyan village market):
Amina sells sukuma wiki (leafy greens) at the market. She weighs each bundle fairly ⚖️ and gives the right change. She saves a little and gives some to the poor in her neighbourhood ❤️. Her customers trust her and she is happy because she earns halal money. Her honest work helps her family and pleases Allah.
Suggested Learning Experiences (Age 9, Kenya)
- Role-play Market: Pupils act as sellers and buyers. Practice honest weighing and giving correct change. Teacher watches for fairness.
- Draw & Tell: Draw a picture of a halal job you know in your community and explain why it is good.
- Story Circle: Tell or read a simple story about someone who earned honestly and helped others. Discuss feelings and rewards.
- Local Walk: Visit the market with permission. Observe honest sellers and list halal jobs seen (farmer, tailor, baker).
- Class Promise: Make a "Halal Earning and Spending Pledge" poster for the classroom.
- Math & Money: Simple activity: practice giving correct change using coins and notes common in Kenya (KES) — teacher guides the amounts.
Short Assessment (for teacher use)
- List 3 halal jobs you can do in your neighbourhood. (LO a, f)
- Give two ways of spending money that please Allah. (LO b)
- Explain in one sentence what might happen if someone earns money by stealing. (LO c)
- How can earning honestly be a form of worship? (LO d)
- Draw a small plan showing how you would save and share part of a small allowance. (LO e, f)
Teacher notes & Home Activity
- Keep language simple and use local examples familiar to the children (market, farm, shop).
- Invite parents to discuss how they earn and spend honestly at home.
- Home task: Children ask a parent to help them list halal work in the household and bring one example to class.
Quick reminder: Being honest, helping others and avoiding harm make our earnings and spending loved by Allah. Small honest actions at your age matter a lot.
