English: Conjunctions — And, But, Because, As

A conjunction is a joining word. It joins two words, phrases or sentences. Here we learn four small but important conjunctions: and, but, because and as.

And (➕)

Use and to join similar ideas or add more information.

  • I like rice and beans. 😊
  • She sings and dances.

But (⚠️)

Use but to show a difference or an opposite idea.

  • I wanted to play, but it rained. ☔
  • He is small but strong.

Because (🔎)

Use because to give a reason—why something happened.

  • She is late because the bus was slow.
  • I stayed home because I was sick.

As (⏱️ / 🔎)

Use as to mean because or while. It can tell time or reason.

  • As it was raining, we stayed inside. (because)
  • She smiled as she opened the gift. (while)

Quick tips

  • and = add more (use when things are the same or both true).
  • but = show a difference or surprise.
  • because = give the reason (answers "why?").
  • as = can mean "because" or "while" — check the meaning in the sentence.
