Grade 4 Music Creating And Composing Music – Rhythm Notes
Music — Creating and Composing: Rhythm
Subject: Music | Topic: Creating and Composing Music | Subtopic: Rhythm
For learners in Kenya, age 9.
What is rhythm?
Rhythm is the pattern of long and short sounds and silences in music. Think of rhythm as the way music moves in time — like walking, clapping or heartbeat.
Important words
- Beat / Pulse: The steady click you can tap with your foot. (Like a clock or your heartbeat.)
- Tempo: How fast or slow the music goes (fast, medium, slow).
- Meter: How beats are grouped (for example 4 beats in a group = 4/4).
- Rest: A silence — when you do not play or sing.
- Pattern: A repeating rhythm that you hear again and again.
Feel the beat — Try this!
Stand up and do these with a friend or in class:
- Tap your foot steadily: 1 2 3 4 — this is the pulse (beat).
- Clap on every beat: clap, clap, clap, clap. (4 claps = 4 beats)
- Now clap on beats 1 and 3 only: clap, rest, clap, rest. Can you hear the strong beats?
Simple patterns (visual)
Below each circle is one beat. Filled circles = sound; empty = rest.
Try clapping or stomping with these visuals. Strong beats are darker circles.
Sounds we use in rhythm — easy code words
Use these syllables to practise rhythms:
- Ta = one beat (like one clap).
- Ti-ti = two quick sounds in one beat (clap-clap fast).
- Ta-a = long sound for two beats (hold clap or drum sound).
- Shh = rest (silence).
Example: Ta Ti-ti Ta-a → clap, clap-clap quickly, long clap.
Kenyan drum idea (ngoma) — make a simple rhythm
You can use a drum (ngoma), a tin can, or clap. Try this short pattern and repeat it four times:
Practice: leader plays the pattern once, others copy. Then let another learner make a new pattern.
Activities — in class or at home
- Clap your name: clap for each syllable (e.g., "Ken-ya" → clap-clap).
- Call-and-response: Teacher claps a rhythm, children copy it back.
- Make a rhythm circle: each child adds one beat to a repeating pattern.
- Use Kenyan songs or dances: listen and try to find the beat with foot taps.
Quick quiz (answers below)
- What is the 'beat' or 'pulse' in music?
- If you clap on counts 1 and 3 in 4/4 time, are you clapping on strong or weak beats?
- How many beats does Ta-a (a long sound) hold if it is two beats?
- The beat is the steady pulse you can tap or clap.
- You are clapping on the strong beats (1 and 3 are strong in 4/4).
- Ta-a holds two beats.
Final tip
Rhythm is fun! Use clapping, tapping, drums and songs from home. Share Kenyan rhythms from village songs, church songs or popular local tunes and make your own patterns. Practice with friends!
