1. What is dance?
Dance is moving your body to music. You can tell a story, show feelings, or celebrate. Dancing helps you listen to rhythm, be active, and have fun.
2. Kenyan dances to know
- Maasai β Adumu (jumping dance) π¦
- Luhya β Isikuti (energetic drum dance) π₯
- Coastal (Swahili) β Chakacha (fast hip movements) π
- Luo β Ohangla / songs with lively steps πΈ
- Benga β music style that people like to dance to π
3. Warm-up (5 minutes)
- March on the spot β 30 seconds.
- Shake your arms and shoulders β 20 seconds.
- Gentle side steps, reach up and down β 30 seconds.
- Take 3 deep breaths before you start dancing.
4. Simple steps and rhythm
Count beats like this: 1 2 3 4 β keep steady. Try these moves to 4 beats:
(Step right, bring left, step right, clap on 4)
(Small jump on beat 2, small jump on beat 4)
5. A short choreography (8 counts)
Practice slowly, say the counts out loud: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
- Counts 1β2: Step right, together.
- Counts 3β4: Step left, together.
- Counts 5β6: Turn a little to the right (face a new direction).
- Counts 7β8: Clap twice and bow slightly (or wave).
Repeat this 4 times β you have a short dance to perform!
6. Rhythm game (fun warm-up)
Leader claps a short pattern (e.g. clapβpauseβclap). Everyone copies the pattern and adds one clap. This trains listening and keeping the beat.
7. Safety and dancing manners
- Dance in an open space with no sharp things nearby.
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes or dance barefoot on a safe floor.
- Be kind: do not copy moves that make others uncomfortable.
- Warm up and cool down to avoid getting hurt.
8. Practice plan (20 minutes)
- 5 min warm-up
- 7 min practice steps & rhythm
- 8 min put steps into the 8-count choreography
9. Try this at home or school
Perform the 8-count choreography to a favourite Kenyan song or a drum beat. Invite friends or family to join!
