Paper Caft: Combined Paper Craft Technique

Subject: Art And Craft | Subtopic: Combined Paper Craft Technique
For learners aged 8 (Kenya)

What is "Combined Paper Craft"?

It means using two or more paper skills together to make one nice thing. For example: fold + cut + paste (origami + collage) or roll + glue + draw (quilling + drawing).

Materials (easy to find in Kenya)

  • Coloured paper or manila paper
  • Old newspapers or cereal box cardboard (recycle!)
  • Safety scissors (ask an adult)
  • Glue (white PVA or glue stick)
  • Pencil, ruler, crayons or colour pencils
  • Thin strips of paper for rolling (quilling)
  • String or tape

Safety tips

  • Use scissors carefully. Ask an adult for help if needed.
  • Use non-toxic glue and keep your work area clean.
  • Wash hands after using glue or paint.

Easy techniques to mix

1) Folding (origami) — fold paper into shapes (boats, birds).

2) Cutting and paper shapes — cut leaves, animals, flowers.

3) Rolling (quilling) — roll thin strips into spirals to make flowers or eyes.

4) Weaving — weave strips to make mats or patterns.

5) Pop-up / Layering — make cards with parts that stand up.

Project: Kenyan Flower Pop-up Card (mixes folding, rolling & collage)

Time: 30–45 minutes

  1. Fold an A4 paper in half to make the card base (ask teacher to help if A4 is big).
  2. Cut a small rectangle (about 4cm x 2cm). Fold it in half and cut two little slits to make a pop-up tab. Glue the tab inside the centre of the card so it stands up when card opens.
  3. Make flower petals: cut 5 heart/teardrop shapes from coloured paper.
  4. Roll thin paper strips into tight spirals for the flower centres. Use glue to keep them rolled.
  5. Glue the rolled centre on the pop-up tab. Arrange petals around it and glue each petal so the flower stands up when card opens.
  6. Decorate the card front with drawn stems, leaves, and patterns. Use Kenyan colours (black, red, green, white) or your favourite colours.

Teacher/Parent tip: Show one step and let children try. Encourage neat cuts and safe glue use.

Quick practice tasks (5–10 minutes each)

  • Make a small quilled spiral and paste it on paper — add two paper eyes and it becomes a snail!
  • Fold paper to make a simple boat and glue a paper sail (fold + cut + paste).
  • Weave 4 horizontal and 4 vertical strips to make a tiny colourful square mat.

Assessment checklist for teachers (simple)

  • Child used at least two paper techniques (folding, cutting, rolling, weaving, or collage).
  • Work is neat and safe scissors/glue use was followed.
  • Child can name the techniques used and one material they recycled.

Vocabulary (short)

  • Collage — sticking paper pieces together to make a picture.
  • Quilling — rolling thin paper strips into shapes.
  • Pop-up — paper piece that stands up when you open a card.
  • Weaving — crossing strips over and under to make a pattern.

Final tip: Use recycled paper from old school books or newspapers to save money and help the environment. Try making art that shows Kenya — animals, flowers or the flag colours.

Have fun making paper art!
