Prepositions

Topic: topic_name_replace ยท Subject: subject_replace ยท For learners aged age_replace ยท Context: Kenya ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช
What is a preposition?
A preposition is a small word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence โ€” usually about place, time, movement or other relationships.
Examples: in, on, at, to, by.
Main kinds of prepositions (with Kenya-focused examples)
  • Place โ€” where something is.
in Nairobi, at the market, on the mat, under the table.
Example: She left her phone on the matatu seat. ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿš
  • Time โ€” when something happens.
at 7 a.m., on Monday, in August, during the holiday.
Example: The class starts at 8:00 a.m. ๐Ÿ•—
  • Movement / Direction โ€” where someone/something moves.
to school, into the house, towards the river, from Mombasa.
Example: He walked to the market. โžก๏ธ๐Ÿช
  • Agent / Instrument / Means
by car/boda-boda, with a pen, by telephone.
Example: They travelled by train from Nairobi to Kisumu. ๐Ÿš†
  • Other relationships โ€” possession, reason, accompaniment.
of (possession), for (purpose), with (accompaniment).
Example: A book of poems. A present for mama. She came with her brother. ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‘ซ
Common mistakes and quick tips
  • at vs in vs on (place)
Use at for a point or event: at the bus stop, at school. Use in for enclosed spaces/areas: in the classroom, in Mombasa. Use on for surfaces: on the table, on the wall.
  • to vs for โ€” to usually shows movement or direction; for shows purpose or benefit.
Example: I went to the shop (movement). I went for water (purpose).
  • between vs among โ€” between for two items/persons, among for three or more.

Useful tips for teachers and learners (Kenyan classrooms)
  • Use local places (Uhuru Park, Mamaโ€™s stall, matatu stage) when making example sentences โ€” learners connect faster.
  • Practice with role-play: give directions around the classroom using prepositions (e.g., "Put the book on the desk", "Stand beside the window").
  • Mark common errors and explain why one preposition is correct and another is not (compare: at the bus stop vs in the bus).
  • Encourage learners aged age_replace to make short sentences in pairs and read them aloud โ€” speaking helps fix preposition use.
Summary: Prepositions are small but important words that show relationships of place, time and movement. Use local, familiar examples and lots of short practice sentences to help learners master them.
