Guided Writing — Mein Körper: GefĂŒhle und Emotionen (German)

Target age: 13 — Focus: grammatical rules, word order and orthography for writing about body, feelings and emotions.

Specific learning outcomes (grammar & orthography)

  • Recognize and apply common German spelling patterns (Umlaut, ß vs. ss, das/dass).
  • Use basic orthography rules: capitalization of nouns, punctuation for subordinate clauses, correct use of pronouns.
  • Use correct word order: main clause (V2), subordinate clauses (verb final), time–manner–place order.
  • Use guided-writing categories: sentence completion, cloze texts, guided paragraph — with correct grammar.

Important orthography rules (short)

  • All nouns are capitalized: der Kopf, die Hand, das Herz.
  • Ich is always capitalized. Formal Sie is capitalized; du normally not.
  • Umlauts (Ă€, ö, ĂŒ) change meaning/pronunciation: Mütze vs Mutze (spelling matters).
  • ß vs ss: Use ß after a long vowel or diphthong (Straße), use ss after a short vowel (muss).
  • das / dass: das = article or pronoun (Das ist mein Kopf.), dass = conjunction (Ich weiß, dass du mĂŒde bist.).
  • Comma: Put a comma before subordinate clauses: Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich mich schlecht fĂŒhle.

Key word-order rules (with examples)

  1. Main clause (V2): The verb is second. Example: Heute fĂŒhle ich mich mĂŒde. (Today — verb — rest of sentence)
  2. Subordinate clause (verb final): Conjunction sends conjugated verb to the end. Example: Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich mĂŒde bin.
  3. Time — Manner — Place (T M P): Put time first, then manner, then place. Example: Nach dem Training fĂŒhle ich mich sehr mĂŒde in der Schule. ⇒ Better: Nach dem Training fĂŒhle ich mich in der Schule sehr mĂŒde.
  4. Reflexive verb for feelings: sich fĂŒhlen with an accusative reflexive pronoun: Ich fĂŒhle mich glĂŒcklich.
  5. Expression of pain: Two common patterns: - Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. - Mir tut der Kopf weh. (dative pronoun + nominative body part)
  6. Modal verbs & infinitives: In main clause modal is second: Ich möchte glĂŒcklich sein. In subordinate clause: ..., weil ich glĂŒcklich sein möchte.

Common useful phrases (feelings & body)

😊 Ich fĂŒhle mich glĂŒcklich. 😱 Ich bin traurig. / Mir ist traurig. đŸ€• Ich habe Kopfschmerzen. / Mir tut der Kopf weh. 😮 Ich bin mĂŒde. 😡 Ich bin wĂŒtend. / Ich Ă€rgere mich.

Guided-writing categories & grammar focus

  • Sentence completion: Practice present tense verb endings, reflexive pronouns, dative for pains. (Grammar focus: conjugation, cases, capitalization)
  • Cloze texts (LĂŒckentext): Remove umlauts, ß/ss, capitalization or commas; students fill in correct orthography and word order.
  • Guided paragraph: Provide sentence starters (time word, main verb, reason clause) — check V2 and subordinate verb-final positions and proper capitalisation.

Model paragraph (correct grammar & orthography)

  • Include one subordinate clause with "weil" (comma required)
  • Include either "Ich habe ..." (Kopfschmerzen) or "Mir tut ... weh."

Quick tips for students (13-year-olds)

  • Always capitalize nouns — look for body words (Kopf, Hand, Bauch).
  • Remember: in main sentences the verb is in second place; in dependent clauses, the verb goes to the end.
  • Use commas before "weil", "dass", and other subordinate clauses.
  • Watch for ß vs ss and use correct umlauts (Ă€/ö/ĂŒ).
