GRADE 8 CREATIVE ARTS AND SPORTS FOUNDATIONS OF CREATIVE ARTS AND SPORTS – INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE ARTS AND SPORTS Notes
FOUNDATIONS OF CREATIVE ARTS AND SPORTS
Subtopic: INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE ARTS AND SPORTS
Learning Goals (for age 13, Kenya)
- Understand what we mean by creative arts and by sports.
- Identify examples from Kenya (traditional arts, music, athletics, team games).
- Explain why arts and sports are important for health, culture and school life.
- Try simple activities: drawing, a short dance, or a basic sport drill.
1. What are Creative Arts and Sports?
Creative arts are ways people use imagination to make things we can see, hear or perform — for example drawing, painting, music, dance, drama and craft. Sports are physical activities and games that test skill, speed, strength or teamwork — for example athletics, football, volleyball and traditional games.
Creative Arts (examples)
- Visual arts: painting, drawing, beadwork (eg. Maasai beads), kitenge designs
- Music: singing, playing traditional instruments, Kenyan styles like benga
- Dance & Drama: traditional dances, school plays, storytelling
Sports (examples)
- Athletics: running, long jump (Kenyan heroes: Eliud Kipchoge, David Rudisha inspire many)
- Team games: football (soccer), rugby, netball
- Traditional games: mancala (bao), hide-and-seek, target-throwing games
2. Why Creative Arts and Sports Matter
- Health: Sports keep your body fit and strong. Arts help reduce stress and improve mood.
- Skills: Both help you build teamwork, discipline, creativity and problem-solving.
- Culture: Arts preserve Kenyan traditions (songs, dances, beadwork). Sports create national pride.
- Opportunities: Talent may lead to careers (musician, artist, athlete, coach, teacher).
3. Basic Elements to Learn
Elements of Creative Arts
- Line, shape and color — help you make pictures and patterns.
- Texture and pattern — used in beadwork and fabrics.
- Rhythm and movement — important in dance and music.
- Form and composition — arrange parts so the work looks good.
Principles of Sports
- Skill practice — passing, dribbling, throwing.
- Fitness — endurance, strength, flexibility.
- Rules and fair play — know the basic rules and respect opponents.
- Teamwork — communicate and support teammates.
4. Simple Weekly Practice (Try at school or at home)
Mon
Drawing 20 min + warm-up jog 10 min
Tue
Dance steps 20 min (try a traditional rhythm)
Wed
Football dribbling 20 min
Thu
Craft: bead pattern 30 min
Fri
Sprint practice 15 min + cool down
Sat
School music/dance club (join in)
5. Short Activities You Can Do Now
- Draw it: Look outside — draw a simple tree or house using only lines and 3 colours.
- Make a rhythm: Clap a 4-beat pattern, then ask friends to copy and add a second rhythm.
- Dance step: Learn a two-step beat and add a hand movement — film and watch to improve.
- Sports drill: Set up two cones 10 metres apart and practice running between them 6 times (rest 1 min).
- Community: Ask family elders to teach a traditional song or game and record notes.
6. Safety and Good Habits
- Always warm up before sports and cool down after.
- Use safe tools (scissors, needles) carefully when doing crafts — ask an adult for help.
- Drink water and rest — avoid playing in very hot sun for too long.
- Respect teammates, opponents and teachers — fair play matters more than winning.
7. Quick Check (questions) & Small Project Ideas
- Name two creative arts and two sports popular in Kenya.
- Give one reason why arts help mental health.
- List three things to check before starting a sports practice.
Project idea: Create a class exhibition:
- Collect drawings, beadwork, and a short dance or song from classmates.
- Prepare a poster explaining the materials and a short performance.
- Invite another class to watch and explain the cultural meaning.
8. Short Glossary
- Rhythm
- A pattern of sounds or movements in music and dance.
- Composition
- How parts of an artwork are arranged to make it look good.
- Warm-up
- Light exercises you do before playing to prevent injury.
- Fair play
- Playing honestly and respecting others in sport.
Quick Tips
- Practice a little every day — small steps build skill.
- Watch Kenyan artists and athletes for ideas — learn from role models.
- Share what you make — art and sports are fun when we do them together.
