Learning goals

  • Know the main components of Creative Arts and Sports.
  • Give Kenyan examples for each component.
  • Try simple activities to practise art and sports skills.

Main components (with examples and activities)

1. Visual Arts 🎨

Making images by drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture.

  • Examples: school poster designs, landscape painting, clay masks, beadwork patterns common in Kenyan craft.
  • Simple activity: Draw or paint a Kenyan landscape (tea farm, Rift Valley hills or a market scene). Use 3 colours only to practice mixing.

2. Performing Arts (Music, Dance, Drama) 🎭🕺

Performing arts use the body and voice to tell stories, celebrate and entertain.

  • Examples: school choir songs, traditional dances (e.g., Maasai jumping dance, Luhya Isukuti, Luo Ohangla), short plays about community life.
  • Simple activity: In groups, make a 2-minute skit about "school life" or learn and perform a short traditional dance step.

3. Crafts and Design ✂️

Handmade objects and decorative designs using local materials.

  • Examples: beadwork, basket weaving, recycled-paper crafts, logo or uniform design for a school club.
  • Simple activity: Make a small bead keychain or decorate a recycled jar using paint and fabric scraps.

4. Sports and Games ⚽🏃

Competitive and non-competitive physical activities that build fitness and teamwork.

  • Examples: athletics (running events—Kenya is famous for runners), football, netball, volleyball, traditional games like bao and tag games.
  • Simple activity: Practice a warm-up routine (5 minutes), run a 100m sprint or play a small-sided football match.

5. Physical Education & Fitness 🏋️‍♀️

Lessons that teach movement skills, health, safety and how to stay fit.

  • Examples: exercises, stretching, basic first aid, games rules and fair play.
  • Simple activity: Create a weekly fitness plan: jumping jacks, sit-ups, shuttle runs and stretching.

6. Cultural & Traditional Arts 🌍

Art forms that reflect local cultures and traditions found in Kenyan communities.

  • Examples: storytelling, proverbs, traditional songs, local dress and ornament styles.
  • Simple activity: Collect a short story or proverb from an elder and perform it with simple actions.

7. Media & Digital Arts 💻

Using cameras, sound recorders, apps and simple software to make art and document events.

  • Examples: photographing a school event, recording a group song, creating a short video about a community issue.
  • Simple activity: Use a phone to record a 1-minute interview with a friend about their favourite sport or art hobby.

Why these components matter

  • Help you express ideas and feelings (arts) and stay healthy and work with others (sports).
  • Keep Kenyan cultures alive and help you learn respect and teamwork.
  • Provide skills that can become hobbies or jobs (artist, coach, performer).
