Mandarin Chinese — Greetings & Introductions (Listening & Speaking)

Subtopic: Active Listening (age ~13, Kenyan context)

Specific learning outcomes
  1. Repeat words and phrases from audio and text (模仿并重复音频和文本).
  2. Articulate sounds and words with correct pronunciation and tones (正确发音和声调).
  3. Use proper polite/formal language in different contexts (例如:敬语“您”和“请”).
  4. Recognize and use language forms that support active listening (如:表示听到、要求重复、确认理解).
Key vocabulary & grammar (greetings & introductions)
  • Basic greetings:
你好 — nǐ hǎo (you + good) — informal "hello"
您好 — nín hǎo — polite/formal "hello" (use with teacher, elder, principal)
早上好 — zǎoshang hǎo — "good morning"
下午好 — xiàwǔ hǎo — "good afternoon"
晚上好 — wǎnshang hǎo — "good evening"
  • Introduce yourself:
我叫... — wǒ jiào ... — "I am called..." (use to give name)
你叫什么名字? — nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? — "What is your name?"
请问,您贵姓? — qǐng wèn, nín guì xìng? — polite: "May I ask your surname?"
  • Basic grammar points:
    - Word order: Subject + Verb + Object (SVO) — e.g., 我(Subject) 叫(Verb) 明明(Object).
    - Yes/no question particle: 吗 (ma) at sentence end — 你好吗?(nǐ hǎo ma?)
    - Question words: 什么 (shénme = what), 谁 (shéi = who), 哪儿/哪里 (nǎr/nǎlǐ = where).
    - Possessive particle: 的 (de) — 我的 (wǒ de) = "my".
    - Polite modal: 请 (qǐng) = "please" (use when asking or requesting).
Pronunciation & tone tips (repeat after teacher/audio)
  1. Tones matter — same syllable different tone = different word. Practice with short drills:
    妈 mā (1) / 麻 má (2) / 马 mǎ (3) / 骂 mà (4)
  2. Initials & finals: pay attention to sounds not in English (e.g., j/q/x, zh/ch/sh). Teacher demonstrates and learners repeat.
  3. Pronounce polite 您 (nín) clearly when greeting elders/teachers in Kenyan school settings.
  4. Use tone sandhi awareness for 常见 combinations (e.g., 不 bù changes tone before 4th tone).
Active listening — grammar forms & short responses

When listening, students should use short set phrases to show they are listening, ask for clarification, or confirm understanding. These are grammatical forms to practise:

  • Simple acknowledgements (backchannels):
    嗯 — ēn / èn (mm-hmm) ; 对 — duì (right) ; 是的 — shì de (yes)
  • Confirm understanding:
我听懂了 — wǒ tīng dǒng le (I understood); 我明白了 — wǒ míngbái le
  • Ask politely to repeat / slow down:
请再说一遍。— qǐng zài shuō yī biàn (Please say it again.)
请慢一点说。— qǐng màn yī diǎn shuō (Please speak more slowly.)
  • Ask a clarification question:
这是什么意思?— zhè shì shénme yìsi? (What does this mean?)
你能举个例子吗?— nǐ néng jǔ ge lìzi ma? (Can you give an example?)
  • Repeat part of what was heard to confirm (echo question):
你说你叫...?— nǐ shuō nǐ jiào ...? (Did you say your name is...?)
Suggested learning experiences & classroom activities (Kenyan school, age 13)
  1. Call-and-repeat drill (5 min):
Teacher says greeting or question (e.g., 你好, 你叫什么名字?), learners repeat exactly (focus tones).
  2. Pair role-play (10–12 min):
Student A = new exchange student, Student B = Kenyan classmate/teacher. Practice formal vs informal greetings. Use 您 when speaking to teacher/principal. Include short listening responses (嗯, 我听懂了).
  3. Listening for details (worksheet):
Play (or read) a short dialogue. Learners fill in blanks for names, greetings, or whether speaker used 您 or 你 (to check formality).
  4. Clarify & confirm activity:
Students practise asking "请再说一遍" and echoing part of the sentence to check they heard correctly.
  5. Class discussion (5 min):
When in Kenya do you use formal language? (e.g., greeting principal, elder). Decide pairwise whether to use 你 or 您 and explain why in Mandarin short sentence.
👂
Active listening reminder
Use short phrases to show you are listening: 嗯, 对, 我听见了. If you miss words, ask: 请再说一遍 or 请慢一点说. Use polite forms (请, 您) for teachers/elders.
Quick assessment checklist (for teacher)
  • Can the learner repeat 5 basic greetings with correct tones? (例: 你好, 您好, 早上好)
  • Can the learner introduce themselves: 我叫 + name, and ask 你叫什么名字?
  • Does the learner use 您 when speaking to teacher/elder in role-play?
  • Does the learner use active listening phrases appropriately (请再说一遍, 嗯, 我听懂了)?

Note: Focus lessons on repetition, clear tone practice, and using polite forms in Kenyan school situations (greetings to teachers, elders, visitors). Keep activities short, interactive and oral to build listening and pronunciation skills.
