Mechanisms of writing — Word order rules (focus for weather & environment)
Mandarin word order is regular and important for clear writing. Use these basic patterns when you write sentences about weather or the environment:
- Basic order: Subject + Time + Place + Verb + Object (S + T + P + V + O).
Example: 我 今天 在学校 上课。Wǒ jīntiān zài xuéxiào shàngkè. (I today at school attend class.)
- Weather sentences: Time + (的) + 天气 + 很/很不 + adjective.
Example: 今天的天气 很冷。Jīntiān de tiānqì hěn lěng. (Today's weather is very cold.)
- Existence pattern (there is/are): Place + 有 + noun.
Example: 外面 有 雾。Wàimiàn yǒu wù. (There is fog outside.)
- Future or certainty: Subject + 会 + Verb (for future events like rain).
Example: 明天 会 下雨。Míngtiān huì xiàyǔ. (It will rain tomorrow.)
- Negation: Use 不 (bù) for habitual / present negatives, and 没 (méi) for past or absence; use 没有 + Verb (for did not happen).
Example: 今天 不 下雨。/ 昨天 没有 下雨。Jīntiān bù xiàyǔ. / Zuótiān méiyǒu xiàyǔ.
- Questions: Add 吗 (ma) for yes/no: 今天 会 下雨 吗?Jīntiān huì xiàyǔ ma? Or use question words: 什么时候 下雨?Shénme shíhou xiàyǔ?
- Cause & effect for environment: 因为... 所以... (Because... therefore...) useful to explain causes of pollution or damage.
Example: 因为 工厂 排放 污染, 所以 空气 很差。Yīnwèi gōngchǎng páifàng wūrǎn, suǒyǐ kōngqì hěn chà.
Handwriting — clear writing and practice
Good handwriting helps communication. Focus on:
- Stroke order rules: top → bottom, left → right, horizontal before vertical, center before sides (for characters with a central stroke).
- Use square boxes on paper to control size and proportion (each Chinese character fits one box).
- Keep strokes crisp and separated; avoid joining strokes between characters.
- Practice high-frequency characters for weather & environment (copy each 8–10 times): 天, 气, 雨, 风, 云, 雪, 环, 境, 污, 染.
- Write punctuation correctly: Chinese comma (,) and full stop(。) — a clear sentence ends with a Chinese full stop。
Example handwriting tip (character proportions):
- 天: write top horizontal short, then the middle vertical, then longer bottom horizontal. (Top → middle → bottom)
- 雨 / 风: practise stroke order with a teacher or standard stroke diagrams; follow the top-to-bottom and left-to-right rule.
- 天: write top horizontal short, then the middle vertical, then longer bottom horizontal. (Top → middle → bottom)
- 雨 / 风: practise stroke order with a teacher or standard stroke diagrams; follow the top-to-bottom and left-to-right rule.
Guided writing tasks (step-by-step)
Task A — Short guided sentences (model + practise):
- Read the model, copy it in your notebook (use boxes), then change one word to make a new sentence.
Model 1: 今天的天气 很好。Jīntiān de tiānqì hěn hǎo. — Today's weather is very good.Change: 今天的天气 很热。Jīntiān de tiānqì hěn rè. — Change adjective to 'hot'.
- Model 2: 明天 可能 会 下雨。Míngtiān kěnéng huì xiàyǔ. — Tomorrow maybe will rain. Change time: 今天/后天.
- Model 3 (advice): 外面 很冷,请 穿 外套。Wàimiàn hěn lěng, qǐng chuān wàitào. — It's cold outside, please wear a coat. Try substituting other verbs: 请 带 伞/请 戴 口罩.
Task B — Word order practice (rearrange words):
Reorder the words to make correct sentences. Then write the pinyin and translate to English.
- 我 / 明天 / 会 / 下雨 → ________________
Answer: 我 明天 会 下雨。Wǒ míngtiān huì xiàyǔ. — I will rain tomorrow (It will rain tomorrow). - 外面 / 有 / 雾 → ________________
Answer: 外面 有 雾。Wàimiàn yǒu wù. — There is fog outside. - 因为 / 污染 / 所以 / 空气 / 差 → ________________
Answer: 因为 污染, 所以 空气 差。Yīnwèi wūrǎn, suǒyǐ kōngqì chà. — Because of pollution, the air is bad.
Task C — Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) about today's weather and one environmental observation at school or in your village:
- Step 1: Plan sentences in bullet points in English (what to say).
- Step 2: Use vocabulary and correct word order to write each sentence in Chinese.
- Step 3: Copy the paragraph neatly twice (focus on stroke order and spacing).
今天 的 天气 有点儿 阴。Jīntiān de tiānqì yǒudiǎnr yīn. (Today's weather is a little cloudy.)
现在 外面 有 风,也 有 雾。Xiànzài wàimiàn yǒu fēng, yě yǒu wù. (Now outside there is wind and fog.)
因为 最近 下雨 多, 河水 变脏 了。Yīnwèi zuìjìn xiàyǔ duō, héshuǐ biàn zāng le. (Because there has been much rain recently, the river became dirty.)
我们 应该 回收 垃圾, 保护 环境。Wǒmen yīnggāi huíshōu lājī, bǎohù huánjìng. (We should recycle rubbish and protect the environment.)
明天 可能 会 下雨, 请 带 伞。Míngtiān kěnéng huì xiàyǔ, qǐng dài sǎn. (It may rain tomorrow; please bring an umbrella.)

Assessment & classroom activities (suggested)
- Write a 6-sentence weather report for the class (teacher checks word order, use of time words, grammar, and handwriting).
- Peer review: swap notebooks and mark two areas — correct grammar (word order & particles) and handwriting clarity (stroke order / spacing).
- Short quiz: reorder words, choose correct modal verb (会/要/可能), and correct negation (不/没).
- Class display: neat copy of best student weather paragraphs posted on the classroom wall under "今日天气" — encourages writing pride and clarity.
Teacher notes for Kenyan classroom (age 13)
- Use local contexts (school grounds, nearby river, rainy season) so learners write real observations in Chinese.
- Encourage short daily notebook entries: one sentence about today's weather + one about the environment (helps routine handwriting practice).
- When correcting, mark grammar (word order, tense/particle, modal verbs) and handwriting separately so learners clearly know what to improve.
