Grammar focus — Word order & key particles
Basic word order rule
Mandarin typical order: Subject + Time + Place + Manner + Verb + Object.
Example: 我 (S) 今天早上 (T) 在 内罗毕 (P) 学校外 (M) 看见了 (V) 很多雨 (O)。
Short natural example:
今天 (T) 下 (V) 大雨 (O)。 — Jīntiān xià dàyǔ. (Today it rained heavily.)
Important particles & uses
  • 了 (le) — aspect/change: 天气变冷了。Tiānqì biàn lěng le. (The weather became cold.)
  • 会 (huì) — future/likely: 明天会下雨。Míngtiān huì xiàyǔ. (It will rain tomorrow.)
  • 在 (zài) — progressive (is doing): 外面在下雨。Wàimiàn zài xiàyǔ. (It is raining outside.)
  • 没/没有 (méi / méiyǒu) — negation of past/experience: 昨天没有下雨。Zuótiān méiyǒu xiàyǔ.

  • 很/非常/太……了 — degree words: 今天很热。Jīntiān hěn rè. / 今天太热了!
Adjective predicates
In Mandarin, adjectives can be used as verbs without 是: 天气很好 (not 天气是很好).
Example sentences (with pinyin)
  1. 今天天气很好。Jīntiān tiānqì hěn hǎo. (The weather is good today.)
  2. 明天可能会下雨。Míngtiān kěnéng huì xiàyǔ. (It may rain tomorrow.)
  3. 外面很冷,请穿暖和。Wàimiàn hěn lěng, qǐng chuān nuǎnhuo. (It is cold outside, please dress warmly.)
  4. 内罗毕今天下午有阵雨。Nèiluóbǐ jīntiān xiàwǔ yǒu zhènyǔ. (Nairobi will have showers this afternoon.)
  5. 我们要保护环境,不要乱扔垃圾。Wǒmen yào bǎohù huánjìng, búyào luàn rēng lājī. (We must protect the environment; don't litter.)
Suggested guided-writing learning experiences (age ~13, Kenyan context)
1. Warm-up (10–15 min)
- Teacher shows a weather emoji or photo (sun, cloud, rain). Students list 5 words in Chinese (characters + pinyin) describing it (e.g., 晴天 qíngtiān, 多云 duōyún, 下雨 xiàyǔ).
2. Sentence building (15–20 min)
- Provide word cards (subject, time, place, verb, object, particle). Students arrange them to make correct sentences. Focus: order Subject–Time–Place–Verb–Object and correct use of 了/会/在.
- Example activity: Reorder "明天 / 会 / 下雨" → 明天会下雨。
3. Guided paragraph — 5–6 sentences (20–25 min)
- Prompt: "写一段关于你所在城市今天或本周的天气和环境(5句话)。" Provide a word bank. Require: one time expression, one location, one degree word, one particle (了/会/在), one suggestion (应该/请).
- Example scaffold for students to fill: 今天_____。_____在_____。天气_____。我觉得_____。我们应该_____。
4. Transformations (10–15 min)
- Change sentences: affirmative → negative; present → future; add 了 to show change. E.g. "今天很热。" → "今天不热。" / "明天会很热。"
5. Handwriting practice (10–15 min)
- Practice 8–10 characters (see list below). Focus: correct stroke order, even spacing, and consistent size. Use a handwriting checklist (legible strokes, correct stroke order, proper proportion, neat spacing).
6. Peer review & share (10–15 min)
- Pair students to read each other's paragraphs, check grammar (word order, particles), and give one suggestion to improve clarity. Volunteers read one finished paragraph aloud.
Handwriting notes — stroke order rules & practice characters
General stroke order rules
  • 从上到下 (top → bottom)
  • 从左到右 (left → right)
  • 横先竖后 (horizontal before vertical)
  • 先外后内 (outside before inside)
  • 先中间后两边(对称字)
Practice list (write each 5 times, check stroke order)

Tip: Show examples of stroke order on the board or use practise sheets with numbered stroke guides. Encourage students to say the pinyin while writing to link character form and sound.
Assessment / Success criteria
  • Student lists ≥10 correct weather/environment words (characters + pinyin).
  • Student writes a 5-sentence paragraph using correct word order and at least one particle (了/会/在).
  • Handwriting: ≥8 characters written neatly with correct stroke order.
  • Student can transform 2 sentences (affirmative ↔ negative / present ↔ future) showing understanding of particles and word order.
Quick teacher checklist
  • Are students using correct Subject–Time–Place–Verb–Object order?
  • Do sentences use appropriate particles (了/会/在/没)?
  • Are adjectives used as predicates without 是?
  • Is handwriting legible with correct stroke order?
Notes: Use local Kenyan examples (e.g., 内罗毕 Nèiluóbǐ,蒙巴萨 Mèngbāsà) to make texts relevant. Focus student feedback on grammar (word order, particles) before detailed vocabulary correction.
