CRE: Creation — Origin & Consequences of Sin

Subject: CRE | Topic: Creation | Subtopic: Origin and consequences of sin | Age: 13 (Kenya)
Short explanation
“Sin” means doing what God has told people not to do, or failing to do what God wants. In the Bible story of Creation (Genesis), sin began when the first humans disobeyed God. This brought problems for people and for the whole world.
Learning objectives
  • Understand what is meant by the origin of sin.
  • Know the main consequences of sin for people and creation.
  • Think about how we respond—repentance and living rightly.

1. Origin of sin (how it started)

According to the Bible, the first humans (Adam and Eve) were given a good home in the Garden of Eden. God gave them instructions to keep and they had freedom. But they chose to disobey God when they listened to the tempter and ate the forbidden fruit. This choice is the start, or origin, of sin.

Key ideas:

  • Sin began with a choice to disobey God.
  • Everyone is affected because people began to follow their own will instead of God’s.
  • This first sin is sometimes called the “Original Sin” — it explains why humans do wrong things and need God’s help.

2. Main consequences of sin

When sin entered the world it brought many harmful results. Here are the main consequences explained in simple ways:

Separation from God

Sin breaks our relationship with God. People are no longer close to God the way they were meant to be.

Suffering and pain

Life becomes harder: sickness, pain, and death entered the world. Work and family life can become difficult.

Broken relationships

Sin causes dishonesty, anger, jealousy and fights among people — in families, at school and in communities.

Damage to creation

The world was affected too: poverty, environmental problems and scarcity can result when people choose wrong ways.

3. Everyday examples (Kenyan context)

  • Stealing from a neighbour’s maize store instead of asking for help.
  • Lying to parents about school attendance or exam answers.
  • Bullying another pupil because of jealousy.
  • Neglecting the environment — dumping waste in rivers or cutting trees without care.

4. What can be done? (Responses and hope)

The Bible teaches that sin has consequences, but God also offers a way back. Christians believe Jesus came to restore the broken relationship between people and God.

  • Repentance: Saying sorry to God and changing the wrong behaviour.
  • Forgiveness: Seeking and giving forgiveness to others in the family, school and community.
  • Right actions: Doing good, helping others, being honest and caring for creation.
  • Prayer and Bible: Talk to God and read the Bible for guidance.
Memory thought
A helpful line to remember: “Wrong choices break our relationship with God, but God offers forgiveness and a new start.” — (summary idea from Biblical teaching)

5. Classroom activities & reflection

  1. Role play: One student acts as someone who did wrong; another shows how to seek forgiveness and make things right.
  2. Group discussion: List three ways sin affects your school or home and suggest a Bible-based solution for each.
  3. Draw: Create a two-part picture — “Life before sin” and “Life after sin” — and label the differences.
  4. Personal reflection: Write a short prayer asking God to help you choose what is right.

6. Questions for class or home

  • What is the origin of sin according to the Creation story?
  • Name two consequences of sin that you can see in your community.
  • How can forgiveness change a broken relationship at home or school?
  • What good habits can you practice to avoid sinful behaviour?
Closing note for students
Sin brought problems into the world, but the Christian message is one of hope. God wants us to live rightly, forgive one another and care for people and creation. Ask teachers, parents or church elders if you want to talk more about this.
