GRADE 8 CRE THE CHURCH – ACTS OF COMPASSION Notes
THE CHURCH — ACTS OF COMPASSION ✝️🤝❤️
Subject: CRE | Age: 13 (Kenya) — Simple, practical notes to help you understand how the church shows compassion in our communities.
What is "Acts of Compassion"?
Acts of compassion are kind actions we do to help people who are suffering or in need. In the church, compassion means showing God's love by serving others — feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, helping families, and caring for the weak.
Bible passages to remember
- Luke 10:25–37 — The Parable of the Good Samaritan (helping a stranger).
- Matthew 25:31–46 — Helps the hungry, thirsty and sick are seen as serving Jesus.
- James 2:14–17 — Faith must be shown by good deeds.
- John 6:1–14 — Jesus feeding the 5,000 — sharing what we have.
Why compassion matters in the church
- It shows God's love to the community.
- It helps people in need and brings healing and hope.
- It builds unity in the church — we care for one another.
- It teaches young people to be responsible and kind.
Examples of acts of compassion by the church (Local Kenyan context)
- Church food drives and Harambees to buy maize and supplies for families during droughts.
- Visiting the sick at hospital (e.g., Coast General, Kenyatta) and praying with them.
- Helping orphans and vulnerable children through sponsorship or school fees support.
- Organising clothes and blanket collections before cold months (June–July) for families in mtaa/village.
- Supporting flood victims with temporary shelter, food and clothing.
- Counselling sessions for youth facing problems like peer pressure or family conflicts.
How you (age 13) can show compassion at church and at home
- Join the church youth outreach team for home visits and food distribution.
- Collect and wash old clothes to give to those in need.
- Visit elderly neighbours or church members — sit with them and listen.
- Help younger children in Sunday school or in your neighbourhood with homework.
- Pray for people who are sick and encourage others to pray with you.
- Save a small amount of pocket money for a classmate who needs it (showing love in small ways).
"Sunday Share" — bring one extra packet of porridge or one loaf on Sunday; the youth group distributes them to needy families in the mtaa.
Act out the Good Samaritan story. Discuss: Who in our community is the Samaritan today?
The role of church leaders and members
- Pastors and elders: lead by example and organise help when needed.
- Deacons/ushers: identify families in need and coordinate relief efforts.
- Youth leaders: involve young people in caring activities and teach skills (first aid, counselling).
- Every member: give what you can — time, items, money, or prayer.
Short reflection (write 2–3 sentences)
Think of one person in your community who needs help. What could you and your church do this month to show compassion to that person?
A short prayer
Lord Jesus, open our eyes to see those who suffer. Give us kind hearts and willing hands to help. Teach us to share what we have and to love our neighbours as You love us. Amen. 🙏
