Mandarin Chinese — TIME: Guided Writing (Age 13, Kenya)
Focus: Grammar only — word recognition (time words) and paragraph writing (coherence, connectors, correct order of time phrases).

Key vocabulary — Time words & short phrases
Numbers (hours/minutes):

Common time words:
- 几点 (jǐ diǎn) — what time
- 上午 (shàngwǔ) — morning; 中午 (zhōngwǔ) — noon; 下午 (xiàwǔ) — afternoon; 晚上 (wǎnshang) — evening/night
- 早上 (zǎoshang) — early morning
- 现在 (xiànzài) — now
- 今天 / 昨天 / 明天 (jīntiān / zuótiān / míngtiān) — today / yesterday / tomorrow

Important grammar points (time in sentence structure)
- Position of time words: Time expressions usually come before the verb or at the beginning of a sentence.
Example: 我 今天早上 上学。
Wǒ jīntiān zǎoshang shàngxué. — I went to school this morning. - Use of 在 for time emphasis: 在 can be used before time phrase for emphasis or progressive time: 我 在下午三点上课。(less common than placing time directly)
- From...to... (duration/period): 从…到… describes start and end.
Example: 我们的课从八点到十点。
Wǒmen de kè cóng bā diǎn dào shí diǎn. — Our class is from 8:00 to 10:00. - Questions about time: Use 几点 to ask the clock time:
你几点上学?(Nǐ jǐ diǎn shàngxué?) — What time do you go to school?
- Connectors for coherent sequence: 先 (xiān) ... 然后 (ránhòu) ... 再 (zài) ... 最后 (zuìhòu) ... — sequence markers useful for paragraph flow.
- Cause and effect & contrast: 因为 (yīnwèi) ... 所以 (suǒyǐ) ... ; 但是 (dànshì) — but; 而且 (érqiě) — and (adds info).
- Punctuation & accuracy: Chinese sentences use Chinese punctuation (, 。 ? !) — keep spaces only for pinyin; accuracy in characters and word order matters for meaning.
Model guided paragraph (with pinyin & translation)
中文:我每天早上七点起床。先刷牙,然后吃早饭。八点我去学校。中午十二点我们有午餐休息。下午三点半放学,回家后我做作业。晚上九点我睡觉。
Pinyin:Wǒ měitiān zǎoshang qī diǎn qǐchuáng. Xiān shuāyá, ránhòu chī zǎofàn. Bā diǎn wǒ qù xuéxiào. Zhōngwǔ shí'èr diǎn wǒmen yǒu wǔcān xiūxi. Xiàwǔ sān diǎn bàn fàngxué, huí jiā hòu wǒ zuò zuòyè. Wǎnshang jiǔ diǎn wǒ shuìjiào.
English:I get up at 7:00 every morning. First I brush my teeth, then I eat breakfast. I go to school at 8:00. At 12:00 noon we have lunch break. School finishes at 3:30 PM; after returning home I do homework. I sleep at 9:00 PM.
Notes on coherence: This paragraph uses time expressions at the start of clauses, sequence words (先, 然后), and connects events with clear time markers — good for clarity and accuracy.
Guided writing steps (for learners)
- Collect time words: list times you do school, lunch, sports, homework. (Use 上午/下午/晚上, 几点, 从…到…)
- Plan sequence: use 先, 然后, 再, 最后 to order events.
- Write short sentences placing the time expression before the verb: e.g., 我下午四点打篮球。
- Use 从…到… for time ranges: 我周一从三点到五点参加足球训练。
- Check accuracy: correct characters, correct time word order, correct punctuation (。 and ,).
- Peer-check: swap with a friend to find missing time words or wrong order.
Suggested classroom activities (Kenyan context)
- Activity 1 — Word recognition (5–8 minutes): Give pupils a short timetable (8:00 上课, 12:00 午饭, 15:30 放学). Ask them to underline time expressions and translate to pinyin and English.

Answer: 明天 (míngtiān) — tomorrow; 上午九点 (shàngwǔ jiǔ diǎn) — 9:00 in the morning.
Exercise B — Reorder into correct sentence: (cards) 放学 / 五点 / 我 / 五点半 / 回家 / not together — form two correct sentences using times.
我五点放学。Wǒ wǔ diǎn fàngxué. — I finish school at 5:00.
