Key words

Addition joins two or more groups to find the total. Example: 3 + 2 = 5. Words to know: add, plus, sum, addend, equals.

Method 1 — Counting on (Number line)

Start at the first number, then count forward the second number.

Example: 6 + 4

Start at 6, jump 4 forward → land on 10. So 6 + 4 = 10.

Method 2 — Use real objects

Use maize kernels, stones, mangoes or pencils to show adding.

Method 3 — Column (place-value) addition

Write numbers in columns (units under units, tens under tens). Add units, carry if needed, then add tens.

Example: 27 + 45
1 ← carry

Units: 7 + 5 = 12, write 2 and carry 1. Tens: 2 + 4 + carried 1 = 7. So 27 + 45 = 72.
Example: 56 + 68 + 17
Units: 6 + 8 + 7 = 21 → write 1, carry 2. Tens: 5 + 6 + 1 + carried 2 = 14 → write 4 and carry 1 to hundreds. Answer = 141.

Word problems (Kenyan contexts)

  1. Wanjiru collected 8 maize cobs and her neighbour gave her 5 more. How many maize cobs altogether?
    Working: 8 + 5 = 13 maize cobs.
  2. A matatu travels 12 km to town A, then 25 km to town B. How far in total?
    Working: 12 + 25 = 37 km.
  3. James bought chapati at KSh 20 each. He bought 3 chapatis and later bought 2 more. How much did he spend?
    Working: 3 + 2 = 5 chapatis. Cost: 5 × KSh 20 = KSh 100. (Addition used to find number bought)

Tips and common mistakes

  • Always line up digits by place value (units under units).
  • When carrying, write the carried number above the next column so it is not forgotten.
  • Check answers by reversing the operation (subtract one addend from the sum).
  • Use familiar Kenyan items (shillings, mangoes, maize) to make problems meaningful for learners age_replace.
