Grade 2 Mathematics Additions – Adding Numbers With Different Digit Numbers Notes
Mathematics — Additions
Subtopic: Adding Numbers With Different Digit Numbers (Age 7)
When we add numbers that have different numbers of digits (for example 23 + 5), we must line up the digits in columns by place value: ones under ones, tens under tens. This helps us add correctly.

Simple Steps to Follow
- Write the numbers in a column. Put ones under ones and tens under tens.
- Start adding from the right (ones column).
- If the ones add to 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry the tens to the next column.
- Add the tens column (including any carry).
- Write the final answer.
Example 1 — No carry
23
+ 5
28
Steps: Line up 5 under the 3 (ones). 3 + 5 = 8. Tens: 2 + 0 = 2. Answer = 28.
Example 2 — With carry (regrouping)
carry 1
47
+ 8
55
Steps: Line up 8 under 7. Ones: 7 + 8 = 15. Write 5 in ones, carry 1 to tens. Tens: 4 + 0 + 1 = 5. Answer = 55.

Tips for Parents and Teachers (Kenya)
- Use objects like maize grains, pebbles or buttons to show ones and sticks for tens.
- Practice lining numbers in columns on a chalkboard or exercise book.
- Start with easy sums (one-digit + two-digit) before moving to three-digit sums.
- Praise the child for using the steps: line up, add ones, carry (if needed), then add tens.
Good work! Practice these steps and soon adding numbers with different digit numbers will be easy.
