Quick grammar guide for imaginative Arabic writing
- Sentence types:
- جملة اسمية (Nominal sentence): begins with a noun — ideal for description. Example: الحديقةُ جميلةٌ.
- جملة فعلية (Verbal sentence): begins with a verb — good for action and events. Example: لعبَ الأطفالُ.
- Verb tenses: Use past (الماضي) to tell a finished story, present (المضارع) to create immediacy, and imperative (الأمر) for direct instructions or lively dialogue.
Example (past): ركضتُ مع أصدقائي. Example (present): نلعبُ في الحديقةِ الآن.
- Adjectives and agreement: Adjectives must agree with the noun in gender (مذكر/مؤنث) and number (مفرد/مثنّى/جمع).
Example: لعبةٌ ممتعةٌ (fem.) — كرةٌ حمراءُ (fem.)
- Pronouns and reference: Keep clear: use هو / هي / هم / نحن / أنا correctly so the reader knows who does what.
- Connectors (أدوات الربط): Use words like ثم، و، لأن، لذلك، بينما، عندما to link ideas and keep flow.
- Punctuation in Arabic: Use Arabic comma (،), question mark (؟), and proper full stop (.) — and keep quotation marks for dialogue: « » or "...".
- Imagery and small grammar tools: Use comparative particles (كـ), prepositions (في، على، مع), and adverbs (بسرعة، بهدوء) to paint scenes.

Model short texts (grammar highlighted)
Style A — Personal narrative (past) — good for storytelling
ماضي:
ذهبتُ إلى الحديقةِ مع أصدقائي. لعبنا لعبةً ممتعةً، وضحكنا كثيرًا.
Notes: ذهبتُ (فعل ماضٍ متصل بالضمير أنا), لعبةً ممتعةً (صفة متفقة مع لعبة).
Transliteration: "Dhahabtu ila al-hadeeqati maʿa asdiqa'ee. Laʿibna laʿbatan mumtiʿatan, wa daḥakna kathīran." — "I went to the park with my friends. We played a fun game and laughed a lot."
Style B — Present descriptive — creates immediacy
مضارع:
الأطفالُ يركضونَ في الحديقةِ، والهواءُ باردٌ ونقيٌّ. الضحكُ يملأ المكانَ.
Notes: يَركضونَ (جمع مذكر), adjectives agree: باردٌ ونقيٌّ.
Transliteration: "Al-aṭfāl yarkuḍūna fi al-hadīqati, wal-hawāʼ bāridun wa naqiyyun. Al-ḍaḥk yamlaʼu al-makāna." — "Children are running in the park, the air is cool and fresh. Laughter fills the place."
Style C — Dialogue / Commands — lively and immediate
أمر / سؤال:
«تعالَ! أسرعْ! هل تريدُ أن نلعبَ لعبةً جديدةً؟»
Notes: commands use imperative (تعالَ، أسرعْ), questions use هل ...؟.
Transliteration: "Taʿāl! Asriʿ! Hal turīdu an nalʿaba laʿbatan jadīdatan?" — "Come! Hurry! Do you want to play a new game?"
Guided writing steps (focus on grammar)
- Decide the tense (past for story, present for vivid scene). Mark it at the start and keep it mostly consistent.
- Choose 3–4 main nouns (people, place, object). Make adjectives agree in gender and number.
- Use clear pronouns. If you change subject, repeat the noun to avoid confusion.
- Use connectors (ثم، و، لأن) to join sentences.
- Check verb conjugations for person and number (أنا، نحن، هو/هي، هم).
- End with a strong closing sentence: short verb sentence or descriptive nominal sentence.
Practice activities (grammar focus)
Activity 1 — Identify features (tick)
Read the sentence and say which features you see:
- الحديقةُ هادئةٌ اليومَ.
- Features to identify: جملة اسمية / صفة متفقة / زمن؟ (answer: جملة اسمية — adjective agreement — present-state).
Activity 2 — Fill the correct verb form
Complete: أنا ___ (لعب) في الحديقةِ أمسِ.
Correct: لعبتُ (past for أنا).
Activity 3 — Write a short imaginative paragraph (50–80 words) in Arabic
Instructions (grammar checklist):
- Choose past or present and keep it consistent.
- Use at least two adjectives that agree with their nouns.
- Use one connector (ثم / و / لذلك / لأن).
- Write 4–7 sentences (mix nominal and verbal sentences).
أذكرُ يومًا ممتعًا في الحديقةِ...
Short rubric (teacher / self-check)
- Grammar & agreement: 40% (verbs correct for tense and person; adjectives agree in gender/number).
- Clarity and pronoun reference: 20% (reader always knows who is acting).
- Use of connectors and sentence types: 20% (flow and variety: nominal + verbal).
- Length and theme relevance (Fun & Enjoyment): 20% (50–80 words; theme clear).
How grammar creates style (brief)
اختيار الزمن والمكونات النحوية يغير أسلوب النص: الزمن الماضي يجعل القصة ماضوية ومكتملة؛ المضارع يجعل الأحداث حية وقريبة؛ الجمل القصيرة تعطي شعور الحركة؛ والعبارات الوصفية الطويلة تبني صورًا جميلة في الخيال. انتبه إلى الاتفاق والضمائر لتبقى كتابتك واضحة وممتعة.
