Mathematics — Geometry

Subtopic: Position and Direction (Age 8)

In this lesson we learn how to say where things are (position) and how to move or point (direction). Use words like:

  • Position words: left, right, above, below, in front of, behind, next to, between, on, under.
  • Direction words: forwards, backwards, turn left, turn right, clockwise, anticlockwise.
  • Compass directions: North, South, East, West (often written N, S, E, W).

Where is the ball?

Look at the picture:

Box
The ball is in the box (or inside).
If the ball were on top, we would say on the box.
If the ball were below the box, we would say under the box.

Grid map — Learn position with rows and columns

We use letters for rows and numbers for columns. Example: C3 means row C and column 3.

Grid (Rows A–E, Columns 1–5)
1 2 3 4 5
A
B
C 🔴
D
E
Red dot is at C3.

Examples and short activities

  1. Say where the red dot is: Answer: C3.
  2. From C3 move 1 step north (up). Where are you? Answer: B3.
  3. From B3 move 2 steps east (right). Where are you? Answer: B5.
  4. Find the position words in a classroom: your book might be on the desk, your bag under the chair, the teacher is in front of the class.
  5. Play "Simon says": Simon says "turn right", "go forward", "turn left", "go back". This helps learn directions.

Practice — Try these (write the answers)

  • 1) A ball is under a table. Which word tells this position? (Answer: under)
  • 2) If you face north and turn right, which direction will you face? (Answer: East)
  • 3) On the grid, start at C3. Move south 2 steps. Where are you? (Answer: E3)
  • 4) Place a pencil between two books — show with a drawing.
Tips for parents and teachers:
  • Use classroom items for real examples (book on desk, bag under chair).
  • Walk simple routes outside: "walk 3 steps north, turn right".
  • Use the grid to make a small treasure hunt for children.

Well done! Practice these words and directions often. Soon you will be able to read maps and give clear directions.
