Subtopic: Accessories and Cosmetics

Hello! These notes explain how to choose and use accessories (like jewellery and hair clips) and cosmetics (like soap, sunscreen, lip balm) safely. They are for Kenyan children around 11 years old. Always ask a parent, guardian or teacher if you are unsure.

What are accessories and cosmetics?
  • Accessories = things you wear: necklaces, bracelets, hairbands, clips, shoes (๐Ÿ‘’๐Ÿ“ฟ).
  • Cosmetics = products for cleaning or looking after your body: soap, shampoo, sunscreen, light makeup, lip balm (๐Ÿงด๐Ÿ’„).

Why safety and hygiene matter

  • Using clean products keeps germs away and prevents skin or eye infections.
  • Some products can cause rashes or allergies. Always test first.
  • Accessories can cause injuries or choking if they are small, sharp or heavy.

How to choose safe cosmetics (easy steps)

  1. Buy from a chemist or a trusted shop in town. Avoid unknown street containers.
  2. Read the label: look for ingredients, expiry date (tarehe ya kumalizika) and instructions.
  3. Choose mild or "for sensitive skin" soaps and shampoos. For sunscreen pick SPF 30 or more when outside in strong sun.
  4. Keep products closed and clean. Donโ€™t use anything past the expiry date.
Patch test (very important)

Before using a new cream or lip product, put a tiny amount on the inside of your wrist for 24 hours. If there is redness, itching or swelling, stop using it and tell an adult.

Hygiene rules โ€” quick and easy

  • Wash your face twice daily with water and mild soap. Pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Remove makeup before sleeping. Sleeping with makeup can cause pimples and infections.
  • Do not share lipsticks, mascara, or eyeliner โ€” they can spread germs (๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’„).
  • Keep hair accessories clean. Wash headbands and combs regularly.

Accessories โ€” safety tips

  • Small earrings or loose beads can be a choking hazard for younger children. Follow school rules on jewellery.
  • Avoid very heavy necklaces or tight bracelets. They can hurt or pull hair.
  • Use hair ties that do not pull out hair. Donโ€™t keep very tight styles for many hours โ€” it can break hair.
  • When playing sports, remove jewellery to prevent injuries.

Sunscreen and sun safety (Kenyan sun tips)

  • Kenya is near the equator; the sun is strong. Wear sunscreen (SPF 30+) on exposed skin when outside a lot.
  • Wear a hat, sunglasses, and light long sleeves during hot midday hours.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2โ€“3 hours when you are outdoors for a long time or after swimming/sweating.

Simple homemade, gentle care (ask an adult)

Some natural things can help, but always check with a parent:

  • Honey + mashed avocado: a short face mask for dry skin (wash off after 10 minutes).
  • Coconut oil: a small amount can soothe dry lips or skin. Use a clean finger.
  • Plain yogurt: gentle for a brief face mask for soft skin (wash off after 5โ€“10 minutes).

Always do a patch test and do not put these near your eyes. If you are allergic, stop immediately.

Short checklist before you buy or use something new
  • Is it from a trusted shop or brand?
  • Does the product have an expiry date?
  • Is it labelled for children or for sensitive skin?
  • Do I have permission from a parent or teacher?
  • Have I done a patch test?

Fun activity (with an adult)

  1. Make a simple lip balm: under adult supervision, melt a small spoon of beeswax and a little coconut oil, pour into a clean small tin and let cool.
  2. Create a "care box": keep your clean hairbrush, sunscreen, gentle soap and a clean towel in one box for school or trips.
  3. Do the patch test chart: try one new product each week and write how your skin feels.
Warning

If you get a bad rash, swelling, eye pain, or breathing trouble after using a product โ€” tell an adult and see a doctor or go to the nearest health facility right away.

Remember: accessories and cosmetics can be fun, but safety comes first. Ask questions, keep things clean, and always get help from an adult when you try something new.
