Grade 6 Home Science Laundry Work – Laundering Loose Colored Clothes Notes
Home Science — Laundry Work
Subtopic: Laundering Loose Colored Clothes (age 11 — Kenya)
"Laundering loose colored clothes" means washing single items or small groups of coloured clothes by hand or machine. These notes show safe, easy steps you can follow at home in Kenya. Ask an adult for help with hot water or strong cleaning products.
Why wash coloured clothes carefully?
- Cold or lukewarm water keeps colours from running (bleeding).
- Sorting prevents dark or bright colours from staining lighter clothes.
- Using the right soap and gentle rubbing protects fabric and colour.
What you need
- Two buckets or a basin (one for washing, one for rinsing) 🪣🪣
- Mild detergent or soap (colour-safe). No strong chlorine bleach on bright colours.
- Clothesline or wire and clothespins, drying mat
- A soft brush or sponge for small spots
- Access to cold or lukewarm water (tap, borehole, or collected rainwater)
Quick checklist before washing
- Check pockets for pens, money, or small items.
- Turn clothes inside out — protects colour and prints.
- Do a colourfastness test (see below).
Colourfastness test (easy)
Put a drop of water and a little soap on a hidden seam or inside hem. Blot with a white tissue or cloth. If colour comes off on the tissue, the item may bleed. Wash it alone in cold water.
Step-by-step: Hand washing loose coloured clothes
- Fill the first bucket with cold or lukewarm water (not hot). Add a small amount of mild detergent and mix.
- Put the cloth item in, soak for 5–15 minutes if very dirty.
- Gently rub the fabric together or use a soft brush on stains. Avoid hard scrubbing on bright prints.
- Rinse in the second bucket of clean water until soap is gone. If water is not clear, rinse again.
- Squeeze out extra water gently — do not wring very hard if the fabric is delicate.
- Hang to dry in the shade or morning sun. Too much hot sun can fade bright colours — hang inside-out or in shade for very bright clothes.
Visual steps:

(Soak → Soap → Wash → Rinse → Squeeze → Dry)
If you use a washing machine
- Use a gentle or "colours" cycle with cold water.
- Use the right amount of detergent (too much soap makes rinsing hard).
- Wash loose coloured items separately or with similar colours.
Common stains and simple removers
- Tomato/sauce: scrape off excess, soak in cold water, soap, then wash.
- Grass: rub soft soap into the stain, wait 10–15 minutes, then wash.
- Ink: dab with a little alcohol (ask an adult) on a hidden spot first, then wash.
- Blood: soak in cold water with salt (or soap) right away. Do not use hot water.
Safety and good practice
- Always ask an adult for hot water, bleaching agents, or rubbing alcohol.
- Never mix chlorine bleach and vinegar — this makes harmful gas.
- Use small amounts of soap — saves water for rinsing.
- Spot-test strong cleaners on a hidden area first.
Saving water and looking after clothes
- Reuse rinse water for the next light wash or for cleaning floors (if not too dirty).
- Wash small groups together, not one item at a time if possible.
- Dry in shade to keep bright colours longer.
Quick checklist to tape near the wash area
- Sort by colour → Test colourfastness → Use cold water
- Gentle soap → Rinse well → Dry in shade
- Ask an adult for help with stain removers and hot water
These steps will help keep your coloured clothes bright and last longer. Have fun learning to wash safely!
