What are wool and acrylic?

- Wool comes from sheep or goats. It keeps you warm.
- Acrylic is a man-made (synthetic) fibre that looks like wool but is cheaper. - Both can be soft, but they need gentle care so they do not lose shape or get fuzzy.

Check the label first

Look at the small label sewn into the garment. It tells you:

  • Can it be hand washed or machine washed?
  • Safe water temperature (for example 30°C) — use cold or lukewarm water.
  • Do not tumble dry? Do not bleach? Iron low?

How to wash by hand (best for wool)

  1. Fill a clean basin with cold or lukewarm water (about 25–30°C).
  2. Add a small amount of mild soap or mild detergent. Mix gently.
  3. Turn the jumper inside out and gently put it in the water.
  4. Push it down and lift — do not scrub or twist. Do this for 2–3 minutes.
  5. Rinse in clean water until no soap is left. Use gentle pressing to remove water.
  6. Do not wring. Fold the garment in a towel and press to soak up extra water.

Machine wash (only if the label allows)

- Use a gentle or wool cycle and cold water.
- Put the knit in a mesh laundry bag.
- Use mild detergent. Skip spinning or use very slow spin.

How to dry

- Lay flat on a clean towel and reshape the garment to its original size.
- Dry in the shade (Kenya has strong sun that can fade colours).
- Never hang heavy wet knits — they can stretch.

Ironing and heat

- Wool: iron on low heat with a cloth between iron and garment. Use steam carefully.
- Acrylic: use low to medium heat. Too hot will melt the fibres. Always check the label.

Keeping knits neat

  • To remove small balls (pilling) gently use a sweater stone, small scissors or a pill comb.
  • Mend small holes quickly with a few stitches to stop them getting bigger.
  • Store in a cool dry place. Use a sealed box or bag if moths are a problem.
  • Put cedar, lavender or mothballs in the storage to protect wool.

Stain tips (quick!)

- Blot fresh spills with a clean cloth. Do not rub.
- For grease, sprinkle a little cornflour or talc, leave for 30 minutes, then brush away and wash gently.
- Always test any soap on a hidden place first.

Safety and environment

- Use only small amounts of detergent—too much harms water and pipes.
- Re-use rinse water for watering shrubs (if no soap left) or for mopping floors.

Quick checklist before washing

  • Label checked? Yes / No
  • Inside out? Yes
  • Water lukewarm or cold? Yes
  • Mild soap? Yes
  • Dry flat in shade? Yes
Fun activity: With a teacher or parent, choose one old woollen jumper. Check the label, then wash one small area by hand following these steps. Watch what happens and write down how it looks and feels after drying.
