Sculpture: Carving
๐Ÿชจ ๐Ÿ”ช ๐Ÿชš ๐Ÿ˜ ๐ŸŽจ
What is carving?

Carving is making shapes by cutting or scraping a hard material. People in Kenya carve stone, wood and other materials to make toys, bowls, figures and art.

Kenyan examples
  • Kisii soapstone (from the Kisii/Gusii area) โ€” soft stone that artists carve into animals, bowls and sculptures.
  • Wooden spoons, stools and small figures โ€” common in homes and markets.
  • Many carved objects tell a story or are used at home and in celebrations.
Tools and materials (for school or home)
  • Soft soapstone or a bar of soap (great for first practice) ๐Ÿงผ
  • Small carving knife or a dull craft knife (adult help important) ๐Ÿ”ช
  • Files or rasps, sandpaper (for smoothing) ๐Ÿชš
  • Cloth, water, and paint or beeswax for finishing ๐ŸŽจ
  • Safety: goggles, dust mask, and adult supervision ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
Simple carving steps (easy version)
  1. Draw your idea on paper or directly on the stone/soap. Try a small animal, spoon, or heart.
  2. Start rough โ€” cut away big pieces to get the basic shape.
  3. Refine the shape with smaller cuts and files. Work slowly and check your drawing.
  4. Smooth with sandpaper or a wet cloth until the surface feels even.
  5. Finish with a coat of paint, oil or beeswax to protect and shine the carving.
Safety rules (very important)
  • Always carve with an adult present.
  • Cut away from your body and keep fingers out of the blade path.
  • Wear eye protection and a dust mask if stone dust appears.
  • Use soap or soft stone first โ€” hard stone needs trained adults.
Classroom activity: Carve a soap animal

Time: 40โ€“60 minutes. Materials: bar of soap, plastic carving tools or safe craft knife, sandpaper, paint and brush.

  1. Draw a simple animal (elephant or bird) and tape it beside your soap for reference.
  2. Outline the shape on the soap by pressing gently with the tool.
  3. Remove large soap pieces first, then shape the head, legs and tail carefully.
  4. Smooth with wet fingers or fine sandpaper. Let an adult check sharp tools.
  5. Paint details or rub with a little oil to finish. Give your animal a name and display it!
Respect for culture

Many carved objects are made by skilled Kenyan artists. When you learn carving, remember to respect the stories and people behind these crafts. Visit local markets or artisans to learn more.

Try this today

Borrow a safe tool, choose a simple design and practice on soap. Show your work to a family member and tell them the story of where the craft comes from.

Notes: Use soft soap or supervised soapstone for beginners. Have fun and be safe!
