Exhibition Skills
Subject: Art and Craft β Topic: Presentation & Exhibition
Age: 11 years (Kenyan primary school)
What are exhibition skills?
These are the abilities you use to show your artwork clearly and attractively at a school or county exhibition. They help visitors understand your work and remember it.
Before the Exhibition (Plan and Prepare)
- Choose your best pieces: Pick 3β6 items that show your skill (e.g., beadwork, papier-mΓ’chΓ©, knitted items, recycled crafts).
- Theme and story: Decide a short title and one-sentence story for your display (e.g., "Recycled Toys from Nairobi Town").
- Clean and repair: Make sure items are neat, no loose threads or broken parts.
- Labels/placards: Prepare small cards with title, materials used (e.g., beads, sisal, maize husks), and your name & class.
- Transport & packing: Use boxes or cloth to protect items. Keep fragile pieces wrapped.
How to arrange your display (Simple layout)
Use a table or shelf. Keep the most important piece in the middle or at eye level.

During the Exhibition (Engage visitors)
- Greet visitors: Smile and say, "Hello, I made these. Would you like to hear how?"
- Short explanation: Give a 15β30 second description: title, materials, why you made it, and one interesting fact.
- Demonstrations: If safe, show a small demo (e.g., tying a bead pattern). Keep demos short so others can see.
- Answer questions: Listen carefully and reply simply. If you don't know the answer say, "I will find out and tell you."
- Protect works: Ask visitors not to touch fragile items. Use polite signs: "Please do not touch."
After the Exhibition (Pack up & reflect)
- Carefully pack items back in their boxes.
- Write down comments visitors gave and what you learned.
- Think: What went well? What will I change next time?
Do β
- Keep items clean
- Arrange neatly
- Be polite and clear
Don't β
- Don't overcrowd the table
- Avoid loud selling
- Don't block other displays

Short classroom activity (10β15 min)
- Pair up. Each partner chooses one small craft to display.
- Write a one-sentence title and one short story (why created).
- Practice a 20-second explanation to present to another pair.
Self-checklist before showing
- β‘ Items clean and safe
- β‘ Labels ready and clear
- β‘ Tablecloth or mat in place
- β‘ I can explain my art in 30 seconds
- β‘ I know one interesting fact to tell visitors
Final tip: Be proud of your work. Exhibitions are to share learning and creativity β not only to win. Good luck! π
