Grade 5 Physical And Health Education Kabaddi Game – Facility And Position Of Players Notes
Kabaddi Game — Facility and Position of Players
Subject: Physical and Health Education (Kenya) — Age: 10 years This page explains where Kabaddi is played and where players stand. The language is simple for primary school learners.
1. Playing Facility (Where we play)
- Court shape: A flat rectangle on the ground (grass, hard court or tarmac).
- Size for schools (good for 10-year-olds): About 10 metres long and 6 metres wide. (Smaller than adult court so it is easier to play.)
- Standard adult court (for info): About 13 m × 10 m.
- Lines to mark: Midline (centre), baulk line (one in each half), and bonus line. Mark lines with tape, chalk, or cones.
- Equipment: Whistle, measuring tape, cones or chalk for lines, score sheet, first-aid kit.
- Safety: Wear school PE kit, remove jewellery, play on even ground, a teacher or coach must watch.
2. Players and Their Positions
A normal Kabaddi team on the court has 7 players. Schools may use fewer players for small teams. Players change when substituted.
- Raider: The player who crosses the midline into the opposite half to tag defenders and come back safely. Usually only one raider goes at a time.
- Defenders: The players in the other team. They try to catch the raider and stop them from returning. Defenders have different places: corners and covers.
- Corners: Players near the ends of the court. They are quick and good at catching the raider from the side.
- Covers (mid-defenders): Players near the middle of their half. They support corners and pull the raider toward them.

4. Short Notes for Teachers and Players (Kenya schools)
- Use a smaller court for younger children so they can reach the lines easily.
- Mark lines clearly with chalk or rope on grass fields.
- Always warm up for 8–10 minutes (running, stretching) before playing.
- Have a teacher or coach keep time and blow the whistle to stop play.
- Keep a first-aid kit and drinking water nearby.
5. Quick Rules About Positions (Easy to remember)
- Only one raider goes to the other half at a time.
- Defenders must stay in their half until the raider crosses the midline.
- Corners try to trap the raider from the sides. Covers help from the middle.
Remember: Kabaddi is a team game. Good listening, teamwork and fair play make the game fun and safe. Happy playing!
