Physical & Health Education — Tag Rugby Game

Subtopic: Passing and Ball Carriage (Age: 10 — Kenyan primary)

🏉
Key idea:
Hold the ball correctly, pass sideways/backwards, support teammates and keep moving to create space.

Specific Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate safe ball carriage: hold the ball with two hands near the chest while running and when stationary.
  2. Perform a correct short two-handed pass (backward or lateral) to a teammate 5–10 metres away with reasonable accuracy.
  3. Show spatial awareness: move into space to receive a pass and call for the ball.
  4. Apply basic tag rugby rule: do not pass forward — only backward or sideways.
  5. Work cooperatively in small teams and follow safety rules (tags not tackles).

Resources

  • 1 soft rugby ball (size 3 or 4) per 6–8 pupils.
  • Tag belts/flags (or coloured ribbons) for each pupil.
  • Cones to mark area (use stones if no cones).
  • Whistle, stopwatch, first aid kit, water.

Safety

  • Play on safe ground: check for stones, holes, wet patches.
  • No tackling — remove tags gently. Teach safe tag removal with two hands.
  • Wear suitable shoes; stay hydrated in hot Kenyan sun.
  • Teacher to supervise closely and give short rest breaks.

Teaching Points (Simple cues for age 10)

  • Hold: "Two hands, thumbs on top, fingers spread."
  • Ready: "Ball at chest — eyes up."
  • Step and pass: "Step forward with the foot nearest the target, push and follow through."
  • Direction: "Pass backwards or sideways — not forwards."
  • Support: "After you pass, run into space to help."

Lesson plan (45–50 minutes)

  1. Warm-up (8 minutes)
    • Light jog around field (1 min) → dynamic stretches (arm circles, high knees).
    • Quick reaction game: teacher calls "turn" or "freeze" to practice listening and footwork.
  2. Demonstration & explanation (5 minutes)
    • Teacher shows correct ball hold, step-pass, and direction of pass. Pupils watch in a line.
  3. Main practice & drills (25 minutes)
    • Pair passing (10 min)
      • Pupils stand 3–5 metres apart. Practice two-handed pass while standing, then jogging.
      • Progress: increase distance slowly if passes are accurate.
    • Gate passing (8 min)
      • Use two cones ~1.5 m apart as a "gate". Partner runs through gate and receives pass — encourages accuracy and leading passes.
    • Support triangle (7 min)
      • Groups of 3 form a triangle: practice quick passes, moving to open space after passing.
  4. Mini tag game (10–12 minutes)
    • Play 4v4 in a small area. If tagged, team loses possession and restarts with a pass from the back.
    • Encourage backward/lateral passes, moving to support, and calling for the ball.
  5. Cool down & reflection (3–5 minutes)
    • Slow walking, light stretching. Quick circle: What was easy? What will you practise?

You Team Pass sideways / backward
Tip: Always step toward your teammate when you pass and follow through with hands.

Common mistakes & quick corrections

  • Mistake: Passing forwards. Correction: Remind pupils "pass backwards" and practise slow passing while facing sideways.
  • Mistake: One-handed throws. Correction: Teach two-handed control drills (catch and hold for 3 seconds).
  • Mistake: Standing still after pass. Correction: Encourage "pass and go" — move to support immediately.
  • Mistake: Eyes on ball only. Correction: Teach "eyes up to find space" before receiving.

Assessment

  • Teacher checklist: holds ball correctly, passes backward, passes to target, moves to support (use 3–5 point checklist).
  • Peer check: partner gives 1 compliment + 1 thing to improve.
  • Self-assessment: thumbs up (good), sideways (okay), down (need practice).

Differentiation

  • Less able: shorten passing distance, stand still when passing before progressing to jogging.
  • More able: increase distance, add defender in drills, use weaker-hand passing practice.
  • Large classes: rotate groups between passing station, gate station and mini-game station.

Context for Kenyan schools & homework

  • Use school playing field or community pitch; adapt cones to bottles or stones if needed.
  • Homework: practise a short pass with a family member (5 passes) and draw one thing you did to improve.
Teacher note: Keep sessions fun, praise effort, and reinforce safety — tag rugby builds teamwork and fitness for every pupil.
