Mathematics — Multiplication

Subtopic: Multiplication Sentences (for age 8)

What is a multiplication sentence?

A multiplication sentence is a short way to show repeated addition. It tells how many groups there are and how many items are in each group.

Example: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 can be written as a multiplication sentence: 3 × 3 = 9.

Read it like this: "Three times three equals nine" or "three groups of three are nine."

Parts of a multiplication sentence

  • First number = number of groups (how many groups).
  • × (times) = the operation multiply.
  • Second number = how many in each group.
  • = (equals) the answer (we call the answer the product).

Visuals — equal groups

Write 3 × 4 = 12. This means 3 groups of 4 items.

Group 1
Group 2
Group 3
There are 3 groups. Each group has 4 items. So 3 × 4 = 12.

Visual — array (rows and columns)

An array shows numbers in rows and columns. Example: 4 × 3 = 12 (4 rows, 3 in each row).

4 rows × 3 = 12 items

Commutative property (easy idea)

Multiplication does not care about order: 3 × 4 = 4 × 3. Both give the same answer: 12.

How to make a multiplication sentence from a story

Read the story and find:

  1. How many groups?
  2. How many in each group?
  3. Write number of groups × number in each group = product

Example story: "Sifa planted 4 rows of maize. Each row has 5 seeds." - Number of groups = 4 rows. - Number in each group = 5 seeds. Multiplication sentence: 4 × 5 = 20.

Practice (try these)

  1. Write a multiplication sentence for: 2 + 2 + 2 + 2
  2. There are 3 baskets. Each basket has 6 apples. Write the multiplication sentence and find the total.
  3. Write the multiplication sentence for 5 rows of 2 chairs.
  4. Which is the same: 3 × 7 or 7 × 3? What is the answer?
  5. Write multiplication sentence: 4 groups of 4 = ?
  6. Story: A teacher gives 3 pencils to each of 8 pupils. How many pencils? (Write multiplication sentence.)

Answers

  1. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 4 × 2 = 8
  2. 3 baskets × 6 apples = 3 × 6 = 18 apples
  3. 5 rows of 2 chairs = 5 × 2 = 10 chairs
  4. 3 × 7 = 7 × 3 and both equal 21
  5. 4 groups of 4 = 4 × 4 = 16
  6. 3 pencils to each of 8 pupils = 8 × 3 = 24 pencils

Tips for learning

  • Use objects: stones, beans, or counters to make groups.
  • Draw arrays (rows and columns) to see the total quickly.
  • Learn simple times tables (2, 3, 4, 5, 10) by repeating and practising.
  • Use skip-counting: for 4 × 3 count 4, 8, 12.
Well done! Try making your own stories and write the multiplication sentence. Ask a friend or a parent to check your answers.
