Prepositions: to, over, at

Hello! These notes show how to use the prepositions to, over, and at. Read the short rules and try the fun exercises. (For Class 1–2, Kenya)

1. "to" — going towards

Use to when someone goes from one place to another (movement) or goes to a person.

  • I go to school. 🏫 ➡️
  • Mama goes to the market. 🛍️ ➡️
  • We travel to Nairobi. 🚌 ➡️

Rule: verb + to + place/person (e.g., go to, give to, walk to).

2. "over" — above or across

Use over when something goes above another thing or across it.

  • The bird flies over the tree. 🐦 ✈️ 🌳
  • The ball went over the wall. ⚽ ⤴️ 🧱
  • The cat jumps over the fence. 🐱 ⤴️ 🚧

Think: If it passes above or across it, use over.

3. "at" — a specific place or time

Use at for a particular place (small or exact) or a specific time.

  • She is at the bus stop. 🚌 📍
  • We are at school. 🏫 📍
  • Class starts at 8 o'clock. ⏰ at 8:00

Tip: Use at for points (a point on a map or a time on a clock).

Quick comparison

- to = movement toward (go to the shop)
- over = above or across (fly over the river)
- at = exact place or time (wait at the gate; at 7 o'clock)
