What are climbers?
Climbers are plants that grow up by holding onto supports. Some climbers make tasty fruits — for example, passion fruit (very common in Kenya) and grapes. Climbers need a trellis, poles or a fence to grow well.
Why grow fruit climbers? (Good for the environment)
- They give us fresh fruit to eat at home.
- They protect soil from erosion by covering the ground.
- They give shade and homes for birds and bees (help pollination).
- Using compost and trees helps save water and keeps soil healthy.
Easy steps to plant a fruit climber
- Choose the plant: Ask for passion fruit seedlings (varieties like purple or yellow) or grape seedlings from a nursery or extension office.
- Pick a good place: Sunny spot with some shade in very hot areas. In Kenya, plant after the long rains (March–May) or before short rains (Sept–Oct) so the young plant gets water.
- Make a hole: Dig a hole about 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep. Mix topsoil with compost or well-rotted manure.
- Plant carefully: Put the seedling in the hole, fill with soil, press gently and water well.
- Give support: Put a strong pole or build a trellis (bamboo poles or wooden posts and wire). Tie the young stem loosely so it can climb.
- Mulch: Put dry grass or leaves around the base (5–10 cm) to keep soil moist and stop weeds.
- Water regularly: Water 2–3 times a week in dry times. In rains, check soil is not waterlogged.
- Feed the plant: Add compost twice a year. You can also use a little fertilizer if available.
- Prune: Cut extra stems so the plant focuses on fruits. Remove dead leaves and diseased parts.
Care tips (simple)
- Check weekly: look for bugs, broken stems or yellow leaves.
- If you see small bugs, wash leaves with water or mild soap water (ask an adult).
- Keep area around the plant clean to stop pests.
- Let bees visit flowers — they help make fruit.
How this helps the environment in Kenya
Planting climbers uses less space and can be done near homes, schools or farms. They help keep soil, save water, feed people and give homes to animals — all important for conserving our environment.
Simple activity — plant with your family or school
1) Get one passion fruit seedling or cutting. 2) Find a sunny place with a pole or trellis. 3) Follow the steps above and take photos each week to watch it grow.
Mini quiz (tick in your notebook)
- What is a trellis? (A support for plants)
- When are Kenya’s long rains? (March–May)
- Name one benefit of growing climbers. (Example: gives fruit / stops soil erosion)
