Uses of Domestic Animals

Topic: Domestic Animals — Subject: Agriculture — For age 10 (Kenya)

What are domestic animals?

Domestic animals are animals kept by people at home or on the farm. They help families with food, work and money. In Kenya common ones include cows 🐄, goats 🐐, sheep 🐑, chickens 🐓, donkeys 🐴, camels 🐪 and bees 🐝.

Main uses (simple):
  • Food — milk (maziwa), meat (nyama) and eggs (mayai). Example: cows give milk, chickens lay eggs 🥚.
  • Income — sell milk, eggs, meat or animals to earn money. Farmers in Kenya sell milk to markets or cooperatives.
  • Work and transport — donkeys and oxen help carry things and plough fields. Camels carry loads in dry areas.
  • Manure — animal droppings help make soil fertile for crops (better maize and vegetables).
  • Clothes and materials — wool from sheep and hides from cattle can make clothes, mats and shoes.
  • Honey and pollination — bees give honey and help flowers make fruits.
  • Pets and protection — some animals keep people company and guard the home.
  • Cultural uses — animals are part of ceremonies in many Kenyan communities (e.g., cattle in some traditions).
Food examples

Milk: porridge, chai and maziwa are important.
Eggs: fried or boiled for breakfast.
Meat: nyama choma and stews for special days.

Work & transport

Donkeys carry water, firewood and crops. Oxen plough fields. Camels travel in dry northern counties.

How animals help the farm (easy steps):
  1. Manure is put on the farm to make crops grow better.

Simple care tips (for young farmers):
  • Give clean water every day.
  • Feed them healthy food and keep their shelter clean.
  • Keep animals safe from predators and disease — ask a vet for shots.
  • Treat animals kindly — they work better and stay healthy.
Did you know? (Fun facts)
  • Some Maasai families keep many cattle for milk and as a sign of wealth.
  • Camels can go long without water — useful in northern Kenya.
